On September 11, 2001, the Coast Guard put out a call on marine radio for all available boats.

Ferries answered. So did tugboats, dinner cruise boats, fishing charters, and private craft whose owners had no obligation to be anywhere near it. Lower Manhattan had no bridges open and no subways running. The only way off the island was the water.

In under nine hours they carried an estimated 300,000 to 500,000 people out. It remains the largest maritime evacuation in recorded history. Not one life was lost in the evacuation itself.

Most people do not know this happened. It is not in the footage everyone remembers. It was ordinary people with boats who heard a request and turned toward the smoke.

Twenty five years on, that is the part worth handing to whoever comes next. 2,977 people were killed that day, and thousands of others spent that morning deciding, without being asked twice, to go get somebody.

Every member of this association understands that decision. It is the same one they make on an ordinary Tuesday.

Eighty one percent of private industry workers have access to paid holidays, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Which is another way of saying roughly one in five does not.

Labor Day did not arrive as a gift. The first one was September 5, 1882, in New York City. Congress made it a federal holiday on June 28, 1894, in the middle of the Pullman Strike.

The eight hour day took longer, and it did not arrive the way most people think. It was a demand for decades before Congress first wrote it into law, and even then only for interstate railroad workers, under the Adamson Act of 1916. The law most Americans actually work under today, the Fair Labor Standards Act of 1938, does not cap your hours at all. It requires time and a half after forty in a week.

None of that was inevitable. Someone argued for every piece of it.

Members of this association will be on duty today, the way they are on most days the rest of the country has off.

There is a persistent myth that asking someone directly whether they are thinking about su***de will put the idea in their head.

The research says the opposite. A review published in Psychological Medicine examined the available studies and found not one showing that asking about suicidal thoughts increased them. The authors concluded that acknowledging and talking about su***de may in fact reduce suicidal ideation.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month, and that finding is the most useful thing anyone can hand you this month, because it removes the reason most people stay quiet.

It matters in this line of work more than most. The CDC's National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health has reported that law enforcement personnel and firefighters are more likely to die by su***de than in the line of duty.

That makes this a safety issue. This association treats safety issues the way it treats every other one. Out loud.

You do not need a certification to ask a colleague how they are actually doing. You need to ask, and then stay quiet long enough to get the real answer.

The 72 hour emergency kit is out of date.

The current federal guidance does not give you a number of days at all. It says one gallon of water per person per day, plus non perishable food, for several days. The vagueness is deliberate. Three days was always a planning convenience, not a promise about how long you would be on your own.

Here is where most households actually stand, according to FEMA's 2024 National Household Survey. Sixty nine percent have assembled emergency supplies. Only forty two percent have an emergency plan.

The supplies are the easy half. The plan is the half that decides whether the supplies are any use.

And a plan is not complicated. Where do we meet. Who do we call. Who gets the kids. What happens to the dog. Ten minutes at a kitchen table puts you ahead of most of the country.

Our members would rather knock on a door where that conversation already happened.

110 years ago, the Marine Corps Reserve was created for a war the United States had not entered yet.

President Woodrow Wilson signed the Naval Appropriations Act on August 29, 1916. The logic was simple: if America was pulled into World War I, it would need trained Marines ready to move without months of lead time. Congress built the Reserve to guarantee that.

It worked. Reserve Marines went on to serve in every major American conflict since, from Belleau Wood to Iraq and Afghanistan, alongside disaster response, humanitarian missions, and community work like Toys for Tots.

Today it is the largest command in the Marine Corps, roughly 40,000 drilling Marines strong, made up of people balancing full civilian lives with full military readiness.

The most dangerous part of a child's school day happens before the first bell and after the last one.

NHTSA data shows more school-age pedestrians are killed between 6 and 8 in the morning and between 3 and 5 in the afternoon than during any other hours of the day. Those are exactly the windows when kids are walking to stops, cutting across parking lots, and heading home with headphones in.

A few things worth saying out loud to any child walking to school this year. Use the sidewalk whenever there is one. If there is not, walk facing traffic so you can see what is coming. Cross at corners and marked crossings, never between parked cars. And put the phone away for the length of the walk, because a driver who is not paying attention needs you to be the one who is.

Our members will be on those routes when the year starts. We are glad to be there.

There is no medal a service member volunteers for. The Purple Heart is the one nobody wants to earn.

It is awarded for being wounded or killed in action against an enemy of the United States. Not for valor. Not for leadership. For bearing the cost.

Established by George Washington on August 7, 1782 as the Badge of Military Merit and revived as the Purple Heart in 1932, it is the oldest military decoration still awarded in the United States. The National Purple Heart Hall of Honor estimates roughly 1.8 million have been given out, though records from the early years are incomplete. Approximately 430,000 were awarded posthumously.

Many members of this association are veterans. Some carry this decoration. Some lost friends who earned it the hardest way possible.

Today, and every day, we honor them.

236 years ago today, the Coast Guard started with ten ships and a tariff problem.

That is not a joke. When Congress authorized the Revenue Cutter Service on August 4, 1790, the mission was collecting duties and stopping smugglers. What it became is something else entirely.

In 1915, the Revenue Cutter Service merged with the U.S. Life-Saving Service to create the modern Coast Guard, and the mission expanded to include the work most people associate with it now. Search and rescue. Icebreaking. Drug interdiction. Port security. Environmental response. Eleven statutory missions in total, carried out by roughly 40,000 active duty members, 7,000 reservists, and thousands of auxiliary volunteers.

It is the smallest branch of the armed forces and the one most likely to be the reason someone makes it home.

Happy birthday to the U.S. Coast Guard from everyone at this association.

🌟 Christmas in July is here, and yes, that is actually a thing.

In 1933, Keystone Camp in Brevard, North Carolina decided their summer campers should not have to wait until December to feel Christmas spirit. They put up a tree, exchanged gifts, and the tradition started spreading. Almost 100 years later, it is officially observed on July 25.

To the members of this association who spend so much of the real Christmas season at work, today is a small reminder that the people who serve our community deserve to feel a little holiday spirit too.

🎆 Happy Fourth of July from this association to your family. 🎆

This year is different. America is celebrating its 250th birthday, and there is no better time to pause and appreciate what this country was built on.

A fun fact for the day: The first organized Independence Day celebration took place in Philadelphia on July 4, 1777, exactly one year after the Declaration was signed. It included a 13-gun salute and the very first Fourth of July fireworks display. The tradition you are about to enjoy tonight is 249 years old.
