Triple-digit heat is still here in the Rio Grande Valley. Our PM Cooling Center gives neighbors living on the street a place to cool down, rest, and have dinner.

But staying cool doesn't solve every barrier to housing.

Missing identification or birth certificates can prevent someone from completing the steps needed to get rehoused.

The cost of staying cool is rising. As Texas electricity costs continue to climb, more families are finding it harder to keep up with their monthly bills.

In the past eight months, Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley received 252 requests for utility assistance in Willacy and Cameron County, and has helped 535 households in Starr and Hidalgo County with utility assistance.

For families facing rising costs and extreme Texas heat, keeping the electricity on isn't simply about comfort, it can be a matter of health, safety, and dignity.

This Labor Day, we reflect on the dignity of work and the people who make our communities possible.

Work is more than a paycheck. Work allows us to contribute our gifts, care for our families, serve our communities, and participate in the ongoing work of God’s creation. But work is changing…

Artificial intelligence.
An unstable job market.
Rising costs.
Economic uncertainty.

In the midst of these changes, one thing should remain constant:

The dignity of the person cannot depend on their economic value. We are not made for the economy. The economy is meant to serve the human person.

A just economy should create opportunities for people to flourish while protecting those who are most vulnerable.

What would it look like to truly honor the dignity of work?

To pay people fairly.
To protect workers.
To create opportunities.
To care for those who are struggling.
To treat every person with dignity.

This Labor Day, we honor every person whose work helps build our communities. May we remember that every worker is more than a job title, a productivity number, or a line on a balance sheet.

Every person is made in the image and likeness of God.

At Catholic Charities of the Rio Grande Valley, we strive to put these teachings into action:

See the person, not the problem.�Build belonging, not isolation.�Protect rights and embrace responsibility.�Stand with the poor and vulnerable, not leave them behind.�Honor the dignity of work, not measure a person by their job.�See your neighbor, not a stranger.�Care for God's creation, not only what is convenient.

These aren't simply ideals. They shape how we accompany families, serve our neighbors experiencing homelessness, support mothers and children, respond to hardship, and care for our community.

Catholic Social Teaching reminds us that our faith is meant to move us; to see differently, love deeply, and serve generously.
