The California Highway Patrol is warning people about fake text messages claiming they owe money for unpaid tickets.

Several people have reported getting suspicious texts from unknown numbers. The messages say the person has unpaid tickets and are threatening them with final reminders, and include a payment link to avoid repercussions.

The texts are fake and part of a phishing scam. Please do not click links or share any personal or financial information with unknown callers or texters. CHP does not elicit payments via text message.

Anyone who gets a call or text from someone claiming to be from CHP and asking for money should report it to local law enforcement immediately.

With rainy season among us, here’s your reminder to slow down and take precautions.

The driver of this vehicle recently lost control on a rain-soaked roadway and crashed through a fence. Fortunately, there were no injuries or pedestrians out walking— but this could have ended very differently.

Rain dramatically reduces traction, increases stopping distance, and limits visibility. No vehicle — regardless of size, cost, or performance — is immune to the dangers of a wet roadway.

Protect yourself and others by following these safety tips:

• Slow down
• Increase your following distance (6–8 seconds)
• Turn on your headlights. If your windshield wipers are on, your headlights should be on.
• Avoid using cruise control
• Brake early and gently
• Avoid standing water and large puddles
• Stay toward the center lanes where possible
• Make smooth, gradual lane changes
• Use your wipers and defroster to maintain visibility
• Pull over safely if visibility becomes too poor

Your decisions behind the wheel affect everyone around you.

Happy Halloween from the CHP! 👻

As families head out for trick-or-treating tonight, please celebrate safely:

🚗 Never drive under the influence. Impaired driving puts children, families, and our communities at risk. Plan a sober ride before the party starts.

🚶‍♀️ Watch for pedestrians. Kids can be hard to see in dark costumes—slow down, eliminate distractions, and check those crosswalks.

👨‍👩‍👧 Parents & kids: stick to well-lit areas, carry flashlights or glow sticks, and use sidewalks instead of the roadway.

Let’s make sure everyone makes it home with candy and without injuries.
Stay safe, California!

K-9 Brutus

The CHP Capistrano Area is proud to introduce K-9 Brutus, an explosives-detection K-9 assigned to Officer Wolter. K-9 Brutus plays a critical role in ensuring the safety of the public through his specialized training and diligent service.

Recently, Officer Wolter and K-9 Brutus responded to a bomb threat at a local business. Brutus conducted a thorough search of the property and did not locate any explosives. Following the incident, the suspect who made the bomb threat was taken into custody by the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

This successful outcome highlights the essential partnership between our K-9 teams and our law enforcement partners. K-9 Brutus exemplifies the professionalism, dedication, and skill that the California Highway Patrol strives to uphold in all aspects of public safety.

Last week brought some unusual rescues for our CHP officers!

➡️ A parrot was taken into protective custody after its owner was arrested for DUI.

➡️ A possum was carefully escorted off the freeway to a safer location.

While this makes for a lighthearted photo, the reminders are serious:
❌ Driving under the influence puts everyone at risk — people and pets.
❌ Walking on the freeway is extremely dangerous. Please use safe routes and crossings.

At the end of the day, our job is protecting lives — no matter how many legs or wings they have. 💙

The CHP Capistrano Area officers and Explorers and had a great time at National Night Out in Lake Forest and Ladera Ranch!

A big thank you to and Ladera Ranch for inviting us and to all the residents who stopped by our booth to say hello. We loved meeting everyone, sharing bike safety tips, and watching so many kids try out the motorcycle and explore the inside of our patrol vehicles.

Our Capistrano Area Explorers were also in attendance and engaging with all the residents and kiddos. Our Explorer program is currently accepting teens between 15-20 years of age. Please contact the CHP Capistrano Area office for more information.

Your support and engagement make our communities safer and stronger—see you next year!
