SoCalButterfly For the enjoyment of nature

HOA: “We maintain the landscaping.”
Me: accidentally starts a side quest 🌱

There’s this sad dirt patch by the dumpster—usually just trash fallout and heavy foot traffic, nothing survives. So I’ve been casually tossing seeds over there like a low-budget Johnny Appleseed… forgot what I even threw.

Fast forward—boom. Seedlings.
Pumpkin? Watermelon? Mystery produce unlocked.

Now the twist:
Everyone thinks they’re weeds… landscapers are probably days away from wiping them out…
and the usual traffic might trample them before they even figure out life.

So now I’m standing here like:
Do I rescue them?
Relocate them?
Or let nature run this chaotic little experiment? 🌿😅

February in California, 2026: winter said ‘I’m out’ ☀️🐛

Meet Guac Mode (green) and Banana Energy (yellow) — two cloudless sulphur caterpillars absolutely thriving during this weirdly warm February like it’s already spring break.

Same species. Same plant (popcorn cassia).
Different diets = different aesthetics:

🥬 Leaf-only diet → green camouflage king (Guac Mode)
🌼 Flower-heavy diet → yellow glow-up (Banana Energy)

Because yes… caterpillars are literal proof that you are what you eat.

Normally these guys are more chill this time of year, but warm temps hit fast and they went full growth spurt + main character energy. Eat, molt, repeat, disappear into a chrysalis overnight. No warning. No goodbye.

Climate reminder without the doom:
When winters warm up, insects don’t wait for calendars — they respond immediately.
If your cassia looks chewed in February, congrats. You’re hosting a pop-up butterfly rave.

🦋Butterflies, High-Rises & Hope🦋

Who says you need a backyard meadow to raise pollinators?

This tiny balcony — a couple pots, some parsley and pipevine — just launched TWO brand new butterflies into the world: a female Pipevine Swallowtail (moody goth beauty) and an Anise Swallowtail (yellow & bold with black tiger stripes).

🌆 Urban lesson:
Even in a concrete jungle, you can carve out a micro-wildlife refuge. A single pot of host plants = safe nursery, new life, and a quiet rebellion against asphalt.

😂 Funny side:
Your HOA thinks you’re just growing herbs. Surprise! You’re running a butterfly maternity ward.

💡 Educational bit:

Parsley, dill, fennel & citrus = home for anise swallowtails.

Pipevine = essential for pipevine swallowtails (the only plant their babies can eat).

Native or host plants turn balconies into life-support systems for pollinators.

💬 Generational Reactions

Boomers: “Back in my day, butterflies just happened.”

Gen X: “Tiny space, big ROI — respect.”

Millennials: “Who needs a yard when you have a balcony and a dream?”

Gen Z: “Main character energy. High-rise fairy godparent vibes.”

Gen Alpha: “Butterfly core aesthetic unlocked 🦋✨.”

🌱 Tiny spaces can grow big hope — for butterflies and for us.

✨🦋 Meet today’s lady Anise Swallowtail!
Fresh out of the chrysalis and already owning the runway (a.k.a. my finger).

How to spot she’s female:
Look closely at the tip of the abdomen — no claspers!

Males have two little “grabbers” (think mini chopsticks) they use to hold on during mating. Females have a smooth, rounded tail end with an ovipositor to lay eggs. This one’s all smooth — definitely a queen. 👑

Fun fact:
Female Anise Swallowtails often have bigger yellow spots and a slightly larger body built to carry eggs. She’s the powerhouse of the next generation!

Generational commentary:

Boomers: “A female? So she’s the boss now.”

Gen X: “Raises kids, runs the show, still looks fabulous — sounds familiar.”

Millennials: “Butterfly girl power ✨🦋✨.”

Gen Z: “Slay momma, drop those eggs responsibly.”

Gen Alpha: “She’s a girl? Cool. Can we name her Queen Flappa?”

🪴 If you want more of these beauties around, plant fennel, parsley, citrus (their caterpillar buffet) and go pesticide-free — let her babies thrive!
