General information
For the past four years, Reviving California has sponsored a series of conversations with thought leaders on various aspects of budget and governance reform, including two Digital Town Halls in October of 2010, a Symposium for Senior Fellows in September of 2010, two Community Summits - in October of 2010 at De Anza College in Cupertino and in May of 2010 at San José State University - a Town Hall Meeting in September of 2009 at San Jose City Hall and ongoing multi-sector group dialogues on related issues through its Silicon Valley Collaborative for Reform. The Collaborative is a "network of networks" with leaders of regional organizations that is leveraging existing frameworks for community outreach. Members include the Afghan Coalition, Arts Council Silicon Valley, local chapters of the League of Women Voters, the San Jose/Silicon Valley NAACP and The Indus Entrepreneurs (TiE). Background: In June 2008, American Leadership Forum-Silicon Valley and the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation announced a partnership to create a Common Good Collaborative in Silicon Valley. The work of the Collaborative is based on the belief that ineffective and/or unsustainable outcomes are rarely the result of too little action, but rather action that is not grounded in a deep understanding and use of diverse views. California has been laboring under the weight of governance and fiscal policies that inhibit change and progress. Californians have lost faith in our political leaders. And, yet, possibilities abound to reassess our values as a state, to craft a future that responds to the hopes and dreams of all Californians. This is an exceptional moment in history and an opportunity for Silicon Valley to take a leadership role in reforming California. Silicon Valley has the resources, visionaries, and political clout to help move a reform agenda that will serve the common good. There has never before been greater awareness of the problems combined with the feeling of urgency that the public is experiencing today.
