🔥 OVER 200 FIREFIGHTERS SCREENED! 🔥

This weekend, San José Fire Fighters Local 230 proudly hosted our first Firefighter Health & Cancer Prevention Symposium, bringing together active and retired firefighters from across the Bay Area!

In true fashion, we provided over 200 firefighters with access to critical health screenings, including skin cancer detection, PFAS biomarker testing, and esophageal cancer screening.

Cancer remains one of the greatest threats facing our profession, and we’re not waiting for a diagnosis to take action.

Through early detection, prevention, education, and groundbreaking research, we’re making a real investment in the long-term health and well-being of our brothers and sisters.

This weekend was about more than screenings. It was about bringing together labor, researchers, healthcare professionals, and industry partners who share a common mission: protecting those who protect our communities.

🚒 IN MEMORIAM | FIREFIGHTER CARRERA

Today, we honor and remember San José Firefighter Carrera, who tragically lost his life in the line of duty at just 31 years old.

Firefighter Carrera served the San José Fire Department for four years and was assigned to Engine Company No. 10.

During a company training drill, he was participating in hose evolutions when a tragic accident occurred. A hose line unexpectedly whipped upward, striking him in the forehead. Despite efforts to save his life, he passed away later that evening at O’Connor Hospital.

He left behind his wife and five children.

Following his passing, the San José City Council took special action to award full death benefits to his surviving family, recognizing his sacrifice in service to our community.

His story is a solemn reminder that the dangers of firefighting extend beyond emergency incidents and into the training we undertake to prepare for them.

As members of San José Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 230, we remain committed to preserving the memory of those who came before us and ensuring their sacrifices are never forgotten.

Rest in peace, Brother Carrera. Your service, sacrifice, and legacy will always be remembered. 🕯️

A little drone rescue at Station 5! 🚁🚒

Our young neighbor David had an unexpected landing today when his drone ran out of power before making it home—and ended up on the roof of Fire Station 5!

Two San José firefighters came to the rescue, retrieving the drone and getting it back to its young pilot. ❤️

Always happy to help our neighbors, even when their aircraft need a little assistance! 👨‍🚒

Honoring the Legacy and Sacrifice of Fire Chief Herman W. Hobson

100 years ago, on September 16, 1926, San José Fire Chief Herman W. Hobson led firefighters in a two-hour battle against a devastating fire at the Alliance Building, located at 3rd and Santa Clara Streets in downtown San José.

The fire caused approximately $75,000 in damage. During the firefight, Chief Hobson was exposed to heavy smoke and toxic particulates at a time when firefighters had no respiratory protection. Following the incident, he developed pneumonia and tragically passed away less than two weeks later from his illness.

Chief Hobson dedicated nearly 18 years of service to the San José Fire Department. Beginning his career in 1908, he rose through the ranks to Captain in 1910, Assistant Chief in 1916, and Fire Chief in 1918.

Throughout his leadership, Chief Hobson advocated for better working conditions for firefighters, including the implementation of a two-platoon system that improved staffing, morale, and the department’s ability to respond to major emergencies.

A century later, his sacrifice reminds us of the dangers firefighters have faced throughout our history and the importance of continuing to advocate for firefighter health, safety, and respiratory protection.

As we approach the 100th anniversary of his line-of-duty death, San José Fire Fighters, IAFF Local 230, honors Chief Herman W. Hobson for his leadership, service, and ultimate sacrifice.

We will never forget those who came before us and gave their lives protecting the community we proudly serve.
