SAFETY UPDATE
A severe solo-vehicle rollover crash occurred on Saturday morning on southbound State Route 87, just north of Santa Teresa Boulevard. The collision resulted in a major accident that left the driver trapped inside the overturned vehicle, requiring an urgent emergency response from California Highway Patrol officers and San Jose Fire Department personnel to perform an extraction.

To ensure the safety of the rescue crews, the number two and number three lanes were temporarily closed. This incident underscores the severe dangers first responders face every day on our highways.

The California Highway Patrol reminds all motorists that state law requires drivers to slow down and, if safe to do so, move over at least one lane when approaching any stationary emergency vehicle with flashing emergency lights. By maintaining absolute focus and giving first responders the space they need, we can prevent secondary crashes and ensure that everyone makes it home safely.

The California Highway Patrol continues to make progress in the fight against organized retail crime.

From August 1st–9th, CHP’s Organized Retail Crime Task Force joined more than 100 law enforcement agencies nationwide for the National Organized Retail Crime Blitz, conducting coordinated enforcement operations at businesses, shopping centers, and retail stores across California.

The results:
• 97 suspects arrested, including 8 on felony charges
• More than 8,500 stolen items recovered
• Approximately $1.05 million in stolen merchandise recovered

These efforts build on last year’s success and reflect CHP’s continued commitment to holding organized retail theft suspects accountable and protecting California businesses and communities.

Last week, our officers responded to a vehicle fire. At this time, the cause of the fire is unknown, and there is no indication that the incident was caused by any specific mechanical issue.

Vehicle fires can occur unexpectedly. We remind everyone to stay alert to warning signs such as unusual smells, smoke, leaking fluids, overheating, or electrical issues.

🔥 If your vehicle catches fire:
• Safely pull over and turn off the engine as soon as possible.
• Exit the vehicle immediately and move a safe distance away.
• Keep passengers away from the vehicle and traffic.
• Call 911 (tel:911) and provide your location.
• Do not attempt to re-enter the vehicle or retrieve belongings.
• Avoid opening the hood or trunk if there is an active fire, as additional oxygen can intensify the flames.

Regular vehicle maintenance can help identify potential problems before they become serious. If you notice something unusual with your vehicle, have it inspected by a qualified mechanic.

Stay safe, stay alert, and when in doubt, get out. 🚔🔥

🚨Slow down. The road is NOT your racetrack. 🚨

CHP San Jose Area joined our neighboring CHP offices, the San Mateo County Sheriff’s Office, and CHP Air Operations for a coordinated enforcement effort along SR-35, SR-84, and SR-9 targeting dangerous driving.

The combined effort resulted in 117 citations, 17 verbal warnings, and one arrest.

Speeding, reckless driving, and unsafe passing puts everyone on the road at risk. These are not harmless choices, and the consequences can extend far beyond a citation.

Our communities have raised concerns about dangerous driving on these roadways. We hear you, and we are taking action. CHP and our law enforcement partners will continue proactive enforcement to hold dangerous drivers accountable and keep these roads safe.

The unexpected can happen in seconds. Reckless driving leaves even less time to react. ⚠️

Some of our favorite moments don’t happen on the highway. 💙

National Night Out gave us the chance to step away from our patrol cars and spend an evening connecting with the people we serve.

Whether we were answering questions, meeting future officers, playing games with kids, or simply sharing a laugh with neighbors, every conversation reminded us why events like this matter.

Thank you to our law enforcement partners, community organizations, and everyone who came out to spend the evening with us.

We may wear the uniform, but nights like this remind us that the strongest connections are made person to person. Thank you for letting us spend the evening with you. 🤝

You can’t outrun accountability. 🚔

CHP San Jose Area officers responded to a BOLO for a vehicle wanted on a warrant issued by the San Jose Police Department for failure to yield to a peace officer on July 28,2026. CHP Officers responded to the area near Mission College and located the vehicle parked outside the AMC Theater.

Working alongside our law enforcement partners, we remain committed to locating wanted vehicles and holding those who evade the law accountable.

A warrant doesn’t simply go away. And neither will we.

On Saturday, July 18, CHP San Jose Area was proud to join the Seven Trees Neighborhood Association for a great day of community building at Solari Park.

Our officers enjoyed connecting with families, answering questions, and talking with kids about bicycle and pedestrian safety.

Thank you to the Seven Trees Neighborhood Association, San Jose City Councilmember Bien Doan, representing District 7, and everyone who helped make the event a success. Strong partnerships with our community and elected leaders help us better serve the South Bay, and we’re grateful for every opportunity to connect with the people we serve.

Help keep our community safe by slowing down, staying alert, and watching for pedestrians and cyclists.

ARREST MADE IN FATAL SR-87 CRASH

On December 2, 2025, CHP San Jose Area officers responded to a crash on State Route 87 north of Capitol Expressway that tragically claimed the lives of a mother and child.

Following a comprehensive investigation in coordination with the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office, the driver responsible for the crash was arrested on July 13, 2026.

While nothing can bring back those who were lost, we hope this arrest represents an important step toward the justice the victims’ family deserves as they continue to grieve.

When tragedy strikes our community, we don’t stop at the scene. We remain committed to conducting thorough investigations, pursuing accountability, and seeking justice for victims and their loved ones.

Do not speed. Speeding costs lives. CHP will hold reckless drivers accountable.

07/04/2026

We would like to wish everyone a safe and happy 4th of July. Remember to celebrate responsibly and always designate a sober driver.
