San Jose CHP officers had a great time supporting athletes while we participated in the Law Enforcement Torch Run today. We received the torch from and ran the final 5.2 miles, bringing the torch to in preparation for the games happening at Santa Clara University in June. Special thanks to the Santa Clara Unified School District who helped us transport our officers to, and from the run.

A seat belt can be the difference between walking away from a crash and never making it home.

From May 18–31, the California Highway Patrol will participate in the national Click It or Ticket campaign with increased seat belt enforcement. Officers will be stopping drivers and passengers who are not properly buckled up.

Too many lives are lost each year because someone chose not to wear a seat belt. In a crash, being ejected from a vehicle is often deadly, and airbags alone are not enough to protect you.

Buckle up correctly every trip:
✔️ Shoulder belt across your chest
✔️ Lap belt low across your hips
❌ Never behind your back or under your arm

Last night, May 18, San Jose CHP officers responded to a single vehicle crash involving a driver who was under the influence of alcohol.

While this crash, thankfully, did not result in fatal injuries to the driver or anyone else, it very easily could have.

Driving while impaired is known to reduce reaction time, judgment, coordination, and control. A single bad decision can result in tragedy.

If you drink or use anything that affects your ability to drive, do not get behind the wheel.

Plan ahead. Use a sober driver, rideshare, taxi, or call someone you trust.

Help us to maintain safety for all California drivers and reduce the number of fatal and serious injury crashes.

May 15, 2026, is recognized as National Peace Officers’ Memorial Day and is part of National Police Week (May 10-16, 2026), honoring California law enforcement officers who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty. Flags are lowered to half-staff, and ceremonies are held statewide to remember fallen officers. San Jose CHP was honored to be part of the Santa Clara County Peace Officer Memorial ceremony this week. We honored our fallen, and those fallen officers from allied agencies in the county. Thanks to the family, friends, colleagues, county leaders, and community members who attended to pay their respects for the fallen officers. It was an honor to acknowledge your ultimate sacrifice.

For riders, every ride is about awareness. For drivers, every decision matters. Stay alert. Stay patient. Let’s get everyone home safely.

San Jose CHP officers had a chance to hang out with the kids today at Captain Jason M. Dahl Elementary School for the May 5, Day of the Child Carnival. We had a chance to talk about bicycle and pedestrian safety and let the kids see what the view is like on one of our CHP motorcycles. Thank you to the school and community engagement leaders for the invite.
