What do you do with the gift wrapping materials?

Unfortunately, not everything can be recycled. Try reusing the wrapping papers and gift decorations before putting them in a recycling or trash bin.

EPA recently announced a brand-new interpretation of the national food loss and waste (FLW) reduction goal for 2030, which is now in alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 12.3. This new interpretation encourages investment in preventing food waste and keeping it in the human supply chain — instead of just diverting it from landfills and incinerators. Tune in for a riveting fireside chat with ReFED and EPA to learn more about EPA’s new interpretation of the national FLW reduction goal and the huge impact preventing food waste can have on our planet.

More than 85 percent of greenhouse gas emissions generated by landfilling food waste is a direct result of the activities that occur prior to disposal such as production, processing, and distribution. As such, preventing food waste from being generated in the first place presents a huge opportunity to significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Sustainable America Launches New and Improved Food Rescue Locator

The Food Rescue Locator is a searchable, location-based online directory of organizations, groups and volunteer programs dedicated to rescuing surplus food and delivering it to food banks, pantries, and other organizations to help reduce food waste and address food insecurity. Since its initial launch, the Locator has grown to include more than 300 listings across the nation. Sustainable America recently unveiled an improved version of the tool that is more intuitive for food donors and food rescue organizations alike, while retaining essential directory features. You can add your food rescue or recovery organization to the Food Rescue Locator on their website here: https://foodrescuelocator.com/

🤩 EPA is Hiring Research Scholars to Support Research on Food Waste, Recycling and More 🤩

Starting with the release of the National Recycling Strategy, EPA is releasing a series of strategies focused on building a circular economy for all. To support successful development of implementation of the Strategies, EPA is seeking several undergraduate and graduate scholars through the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE) fellowship program to conduct research in the following areas:

🌿National measurement, data collection, and analysis of municipal solid waste, food waste, and construction and demolition materials.

🌿Effective strategies for reducing food waste through consumer behavior change and other consumer-focused interventions.

🌿Best practices and strategies to advance a circular economy for materials in the built environment, with a focus on the enhancing community resilience to natural disasters.

🌿Research on recycled content products, materials and markets to support EPA’s Comprehensive Procurement Guidelines program, which provides recommended recycled content levels for products purchased by the federal procurement.

🌿Methodologies for tracking the lifecycle of materials through the U.S. economy at a detailed level and compatible with EPA's models.

🌿Methodologies for determining the amount of plastic waste that is escaping into the environment.

According to ReFED, nearly 70% of surplus food is treated as true “waste,” meaning it is either left in the fields after harvest, incinerated, dumped, deposited in the sewer, sent to landfill, or applied to the land. But much of this could have been used for other purposes – in fact, recycling offers one of the largest opportunities for decreasing the amount of waste in our food system. What can be done to ensure we’re finding the highest and best use for any food or scraps that remain? Speakers include:

- Nora Goldstein, BioCycle
- Abjheet Broloe, Electro-Active Technologies
- Justin Kamine, Do Good Foods

Join us for a new webinar series designed to help you make the most of ReFED’s Insights Engine and Roadmap to 2030: Reducing U.S. Food Waste by 50%. Each installment will dig deep into one of the seven key action areas of the Roadmap to 2030, exploring what’s happening on the ground, what challe...

🌿 EPA Releases National Recycling Strategy: Part One of a Series on Building a Circular Economy for All 🌿

Today, on America Recycles Day, EPA is proud to release the National Recycling Strategy, which is the first of a series of strategies to build a circular economy for all. The Strategy identifies the actions needed to address the major recycling challenges facing the nation and to create a stronger, more resilient, and cost-effective municipal solid waste recycling system.

During the next several months, EPA will work collaboratively with private and public stakeholders to develop a plan for implementing the National Recycling Strategy. EPA encourages communities across all levels of government, along with private and non-profit organizations, to join the effort in helping achieve the strategy’s ambitious goal, please visit our Strategy website: https://www.epa.gov/recyclingstrategy/national-recycling-strategy-part-one-series-building-circular-economy-join-effort.

The Strategy outlines EPA’s approach to addressing the U.S. recycling system’s biggest challenges, including reduced markets for materials, infrastructure that has not kept pace with a changing waste stream, confusion about what materials can be recycled, and varying methodologies to measure performance. The Strategy is also a step toward focusing on the climate impacts of materials and addressing improperly managed waste in overburdened communities.

Subsequent strategies in the series will focus on specific high-impact materials, such as plastics and food, as well as additional management pathways, such as reduction, reuse, and composting.

🍎 EPA Webinar on Food Waste Research 🌽

Wednesday, November 17 from 12-1 PM (PT)

This presentation will highlight the latest research on the environmental impacts of U.S. food waste and the potential benefits of meeting the U.S. goal of halving food waste by 2030. These topics will be reported in EPA’s forthcoming “From Farm to Kitchen: The Environmental Impacts of Food Waste” report.

Over one-third of the food produced in the United States is never eaten, which wastes the resources used to produce it and creates harmful environmental impacts. Reducing wasted food presents opportunities to increase food security, feed the world’s growing population more sustainably, preserve water availability and quality, and address climate change.

This presentation will also highlight findings of EPA’s recent “Emerging Issues in Food Waste” report series including information on how plastics, persistent chemicals and pre-processing technologies affect food waste recycling and the impact of food waste on human health and the environment.
