For its investigation into car repair scams, Spectrum News California turned to BBB Los Angeles & Silicon Valley President and CEO Steve McFarland, who shared three things every consumer should check before leaving their car at a repair shop.

Before handing over your keys, check these three things:
1️⃣ Review the shop’s BBB Business Profile.
Check its rating, complaint history and how it responds when problems arise.
2️⃣ Ask how long the repair should take.
Steve McFarland explains that most standard repairs should take only a few days when parts are available.
3️⃣ Get the estimate in writing.
If the repair will take longer, California law requires a written estimate.

The shop featured in the investigation currently has an F rating from BBB after customers reported waiting months, and in some cases years, to get their vehicles back after paying upfront.
