Waterfront Plan Update The Waterfront Land Use Plan describes land use policies for the 7½ miles of piers, shoreline and nearby lands managed by the Port of San Francisco.

In 2015, the Port reviewed the dramatic changes guided by the Waterfront Plan, and identified policy issues to address in a Plan Update. The Ferry Building, Exploratorium, new waterfront parks and James R. Herman Cruise Terminal mark major milestone achievements. But there also are new needs and challenges ahead. The Embarcadero fingers piers and Seawall are aging. The challenges posed by rising tides and need for seismic repair to protect against a major earthquake, and demands for balancing public and maritime industry needs will be important public discussions. The Port has created a Waterfront Plan Working Group which will hold public meetings to discuss and recommend policy updates to the Waterfront Plan.
