Groceries for Seniors

Each week we deliver over 1000 free bags of groceries to low-income seniors Our clients live with the daily threat of hunger.

San Francisco has approximately 40,000 seniors whose income level falls below the federal poverty line. Being food-insecure can worsen chronic health problems that can in turn lead to hospitalization. Food is a basic human need and without an adequate diet people cannot fight off disease and infection. Low income seniors must often choose between purchasing food or buying medicine to keep from get

ting sick. Groceries for Seniors distributes nutritious fresh food to approximately 1,000 senior citizens in San Francisco every week. Without our help, many of our elderly neighbors would go hungry.

Groceries for Seniors wants to thank writer Christina Gray and Catholic San Francisco for this very nice profile of our organization in their June 2026 issue. We also wish to thank the Fathers and staff of Old Saint Mary's Cathedral for their continued support and generosity, allowing us to use their basement auditorium as our base of operation all these years. A tremendous shout out to all our volunteers who help us with our mission each week is also in order, especially the various local businesses who organize team outings joining forces with us throughout the year (like this group from Wells Fargo pictured)! Thanks to all of you, Groceries for Seniors continues to deliver over 1,200 free grocery bags to low income seniors in San Francisco. We had a tremendous group from AvalonBay Communities help our team at Groceries for Seniors put together 275 grocery bags for low income seniors in San Francisco this morning. We want to thank Grace Naylor (who helped coordinate this visit), Jack Liau, Raymond Mitra, Rose Cordova, Sharon Spiller, Kimberly Martin, Patricia Blair and Ana Hersan for all their hard work. We had a splendid time working with you all and hope you'll join us again real soon.

We had an awesome team from Wells Fargo volunteer this morning helping us assemble over 230 free grocery bags for low-income seniors in San Francisco. A big thank you to Richie Ungco, John Mahany, Lingling Yan, Julie Sun, Priscilla P. Choi, Taiwo Abugan, James Q. Tran, Adrian M. Shih, Joel Morton, Sidney Toledo, Anthony Bradford, Bernadette Simon and Regina Sung (who coordinated this outing) for all your help and generosity. And, we've already got plans on our calendar to host these folks again next quarter! We appreciate you all so much.

Today our bags included a watermelon, rice, oranges, eggplant, yogurt, potatoes, cucumbers, apples AND one dozen protein laden eggs - hand packed by our ace volunteers!

What a treat to host this energetic team of volunteers from Wells Fargo once again, as they joined Groceries for Seniors this morning and helped us put together over 330 grocery bags we delivered to low-income seniors in San Francisco. I'd to thank Amy Cheung, Lillian Chen, Jimmy Chow, Giselle Murase, Minna Yu and Kathy Lim (who helped coordinate this visit) for the hard work they put in. This morning Groceries for Seniors were honored to have a group of folks from TikTok (who are also new neighbors) join us as we put together over 320 grocery bags for low-income seniors in San Francisco. We want to thank Jen Hwang, Andrew Froug, Priscilla Tang, Amber Chung, and LuShuang Xu (who also coordinated the volunteer visit) for their hard work and energetic spirit. Now that you're in the neighborhood, we hope you all will drop in again real soon.

This morning, we hosted a group from Turner & Townsend who helped us assemble over 330 grocery bags for low-income seniors in San Francisco. Some had volunteered with us before, and this time they brought along colleagues who took to the task with a tremendous spirit. We want to thank the entire team, including Andrew Byrne, Akriti Khandelwal, and Neha Rana for coordinating this visit. We really appreciate your energy and hope you'll join us again soon.

Yesterday, Friday December 19, 2025, Groceries for Seniors took time to honor our consistent volunteers with the annual Volunteer Appreciation Holiday Lunch. Folks who join us weekly helped transform the basement auditorium at Old Saint Mary's Cathedral into a holiday gathering spot. Serving as our centerpiece was the hat of our founder, John Meehan, who we always take a moment to thank as we know he watches over us. His inspiration keeps us 26 years strong. Our favorite dessert, the Coffee Crunch Cake from Eastern Bakery was so popular I almost didn't get a shot of its seasonal message. This year's volunteer gift was an insulated backpack which got rave reviews from our recipients. Each week this group of people helps us assemble and deliver over 1100 free grocery bags to low-income seniors in San Francisco, and we're so grateful for their dedication. Happy holidays to all of you who encourage us by commenting on our posts and supporting our mission, and we wish you a very prosperous 2026.
