It was great to see so many new and familiar faces at the reception for 𝘚𝘰 𝘖𝘷𝘦𝘳 𝘚𝘰 𝘉𝘢𝘤𝘬: 𝘕𝘦𝘸 𝘝𝘰𝘪𝘤𝘦𝘴 𝘪𝘯 𝘊𝘰𝘯𝘵𝘦𝘮𝘱𝘰𝘳𝘢𝘳𝘺 𝘗𝘢𝘪𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘳𝘰𝘮 𝘊𝘊𝘈 on Saturday. A special THANK YOU to who created a special space for storytelling with her moving performance 𝘍𝘰𝘳𝘤𝘦𝘥 𝘋𝘪𝘴𝘱𝘭𝘢𝘤𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵, to the musicians who shook the room, and to Kim Anno who made this all happen.

This is the final week to see the exhibition — the gallery is open today through Saturday!

We are beyond thrilled that Danny Duncan has been named the 2026 Kenneth Rainin Foundation Fellow. As Director of the SFArtsED Players Musical Theater Troupe, which celebrated its 25th anniversary this year, Mr. Duncan has taught generations of young performers and has been a pillar and guiding light of this organization. We are delighted to see him recognized for his vast contributions to the theater community and for his creative vision. Congratulations, Mr. Duncan!

Danny Duncan (Theater) is a director, choreographer, playwright, composer and educator from San Francisco’s Fillmore District. His multidisciplinary practice spans musical theater, dance and community-based performance, often drawing from Black history and cultural traditions. At age 17 Duncan founded the Duncan Company of Performing Artists, with whom he choreographed and danced in two ballets entitled Ballet Afro Haiti and Ballet Black that toured the West Coast for seven years. Throughout his six-decade career, he has written, composed and directed numerous productions, including the acclaimed musicals Uhuruh, Billie’s Song and Go Down Garvey. As a teaching artist and youth theater director, Duncan has dedicated the last 30 years of his career to ensuring the next generation of artists has a place to grow in the Bay Area.

Join us this Saturday, May 23rd, 2–5PM for the Artists' Reception for SO OVER SO BACK: New Voices in Contemporary Painting from CCA, with a special performance by Badri Valian at 4PM

The exhibition is on view through Saturday, May 30, and features recent works by students in the Painting and Drawing program at California College of the Arts, working with Kim Anno.

Badri is a Middle Eastern, San Francisco-based artist interested in the relationship between individuals and the manipulated world shaped by war, ideology, and displacement. Her perspective is informed by a nuanced understanding of firsthand experiences with armed conflict, fractured identity, and the impact of political oppression. Through image-based narratives, Badri weaves together formative stories that challenge dominant narratives and question how identity is constructed under systems of violence and control.

Her ongoing interactive project, Forced Displacement, will be on tour and exhibited at Florence City Hall in summer 2026.

Earth🌎, Sun🌞, Moon🌗 Books🚀!
Bookmaking with Mark Shoffner

Join us for a free, all-ages bookmaking workshop, led by children's books author and illustrator Mark Shoffner. Participants will use found materials, paper, and watercolors to create a book about the characters Earth, Sun, Moon, and Space. All materials will be provided, space will be limited so we encourage you to come at 2pm to grab a spot at the table.

Mark Shoffner is a visual artist and author/illustrator of children’s books. His most recent book, The Witches of Glen Park, is a mysterious tale set in San Francisco written for middle-grade readers. It follows four other books created by the author using a range of illustration techniques including watercolor, pen and ink, and photomontage. Mr. Shoffner received his MFA from Queens College, City University of New York in 2000 and has been based in San Francisco since 2013, where he often works on visual arts projects with long-time collaborator Rebecca Herman. Their textile and installation work was exhibited at the Main Branch of the San Francisco Public Library, the San José Museum of Quilts and Textiles, and Tenjinyama Art Studio in Sapporo, Japan. He loves to foster creativity and an exploration of various art and writing techniques.
