Megan Broughton: False Horizon opens tomorrow, 4–6 pm.
Its First Saturday at Minnesota Street Project, stop by to see Megan's phenomenal installation of Copperplate etchings!

False Horizon references a mirage—an optical illusion caused by atmospheric temperature inversions that bend light and create a deceptive visual boundary above or below the true sea or land horizon. Drawing on her experience at the MaréMotrice artist residency aboard a sailboat in the waters between Greenland and Iceland, the artist reflects on what is visible and what remains hidden to the eye in the shifting patterns of weather. Pushing the alchemical limits of copper plate etching, her printmaking process oscillates between control and chance, layering variations of forms reminiscent of floating ice on water. Like an iceberg, much of which remains submerged, the work invites the viewer to imagine what lies beneath the surface.

Megan Broughton is an interdisciplinary artist based in San Francisco, CA, addressing the climate crisis, loss, transformation, and the sublime. Her work stems from onsite study in the Arctic, where she has been an artist in residence with MaréMotrice in Greenland and The Arctic Circle Residency in Svalbard. Exhibition highlights include Berkeley Art Center, Richmond Art Center, and Minnesota Street Project. She received an Emerging Individual Artist Fellowship from the California Arts Council in 2023 and is currently an Artist in Residence at The Exploratorium in San Francisco. Megan holds a BFA from the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts).

False Horizon is presented as part of Teaching/Practice, a rotating bi-monthly showcase of SFArtsED Artist Mentors’ works, paired with short interviews about their teaching and art practice. Presented adjacent to our gallery space upstairs at 1275 Minnesota street, the display will be visible during the building’s normal open hours, 11am – 6pm Tuesday through Saturday.

Join us, this Saturday, August 15th 2–4PM for a FREE Woodblock Printing workshop led by Joe Ferriso. Participants will have a chance to experiment with various block printing techniques with custom made shapes from the artist’s collection, and add to a growing printed mural which will be on view in the gallery through September 19th. No prior printmaking experience is necessary, this workshop is designed for all ages and materials will be provided.

Embracing play, freedom, and optimism, Joe Ferriso‘s sculptural and painted works are primarily concerned with how color perception impacts emotion. Ferriso’s subject is the relationship between architecture and nature, expressed in the language of color. His love for tuning color and the sheer energy of color motivates his actions. Like a vine to a lattice, his color enmeshes with the art object, bringing it to life. The materials that he works with are discards or found in nature. Construction waste, building off-cuts, driftwood, found wood, and abandoned paint colors are the starting points of his labor.

Join us this Saturday, 2–4pm in celebration of Mário Pires Cordeiro's site-responsive installation REIMAGININGS, on view as part of the rotating Teaching / Practice exhibition which features SFArtsED Artist Mentors' works paired with a short interview about their teaching approach.

Works by Mário's students' from SFArtsED Summer Camp will also be on view in the concurrent Summerscape exhibition, also opening Saturday August 8, 2–4pm.

We're delighted to a share a selection of the student work made this summer in camp. Join is this Saturday, August 8th from 2–4pm in celebration of the students and the great work they created.

Summerscape 2026 marks the 31st year that SFArtsED has offered a summer visual art and design camps to the middle school-aged young people of San Francisco. This annual exhibition showcases a selection of artworks created in camp sessions taught by Artist Mentors Ramon Abad, C.K. Itamura, Rachel Major, Tainá Mattiazzi, Tiersa Nureyev, and Mario Pires Cordeiro.

It’s been an incredible summer at our SFArtsED summer camps, and yesterday, our final Broadway Bound group performed a tribute to the great composer Harold Arlen that raised the roof of our summer home at the Jewish Community High School of the Bay. Congratulations to all the artists involved.
