Take a step in the right direction for sickle cell awareness! 👟

Established in 2014 by NeDina Brocks-Capla following the loss of her son, Kareem, Sickle Cell Anemia Awareness San Francisco (SCAASF) is dedicated to improving the quality and access of sickle cell disease care. Through patient advocacy, education and community engagement, SCAASF continues to champion better outcomes for individuals and families affected by sickle cell disease while working toward the establishment of a Sickle Cell Care & Resource Center in San Francisco.

The American Red Cross is proud to walk alongside SCAASF at the KMJ Warrior Walk this Saturday, September 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Bayview Opera House in San Francisco. Join a vibrant community of walkers, partner organizations, and supporters as we raise awareness, connect the community with resources and stand together in support of the sickle cell community.

"I truly feel honored to share my story to maybe help just one person."

After surviving the devastating Camp Fire, Kathie Reinholds knows how quickly disaster can strike. Years later, when Red Cross volunteers installed free smoke alarms in her home, they also learned she was hard of hearing and returned to install a bed shaker alarm.

Now, a vibrating pad and strobe light help ensure she'll be alerted in an emergency, even while sleeping.

"If something happens when you least expect it, I know it," Kathie says. "I will be forever grateful."

Kathie's story is a powerful reminder that preparedness can save lives. Whether you rely on traditional smoke alarms or specialized devices like bed shaker alarms, make sure your home is protected before an emergency happens.

What's your favorite thing to throw on the grill? 🍔 As you celebrate the long weekend with family and friends, don't let a backyard cookout turn into a fire emergency. Grilling sparks more than 10,000 home fires on average each year, so keep the good times going by following these important grilling safety precautions:

🔥 Always supervise a barbecue grill when in use. Don’t add charcoal starter fluid when coals have already been ignited.
🔥 Never grill indoors — not in the house, camper, tent or any enclosed area.
🔥 Make sure everyone, including pets, stays away from the grill.
🔥 Keep the grill out in the open, away from the house, deck, tree branches or anything that could catch fire.
🔥 Use the long-handled tools especially made for cooking on the grill to help keep the chef safe.

Happy and safe grilling!
