Join San Francisco Arts Commission (SFAC) Galleries for “Excavating Uranus: A Psalm for Nyota Uhura,” a group exhibition curated by Ashara S. Ekundayo, featuring the work of Sydney Cain, Ayana V. Jackson, Courtney Desiree Morris, and bryant terry.

“Excavating Uranus: A Psalm for Nyota Uhura” opens on October 8, 2026 at the SFAC Main Gallery in the War Memorial Veterans Building and will be on view through January 30, 2027.

This exhibition transports the cosmonaut into a nonlinear temporal field shaped by Black temporalities. Through installation, experimental video, photography, sound, and sculptural fashion, the artists surface interdimensional relics, artifacts, and incantations lifted from parallel realities where memory and possibility meet. Together, these works explore ritual knowledge, cosmology, and the technologies needed to navigate multiple temporal and spatial realities.

The Arts Commission, in partnership with SFGovTV, San Francisco’s official government cable television channel, is excited to announce it has won one of three Emmy Awards at the 55th Annual Northern California Area Emmy® Awards and Gala, held August 22, 2026, at the SAFE Credit Union Convention Center in Sacramento.  

“Rhodessa Jones – A Cultural Odyssey” celebrates artist Rhodessa Jones who is a San Francisco-based theater performer, director, teacher, and writer whose five-decade body of work tells the stories of women such as The Medea Project. Through the Arts Commission, Jones was recognized as an Artistic Legacy Grant (ALG) award which uplifts artists whose sustained contributions that have helped shape San Francisco diverse arts and culture ecosystem.

“I’m incredibly proud of the Arts Commission and SFGovTV teams for this recognition. They approached Rhodessa Jones’s story with the care, creativity, and artistry it deserves, and the result is something truly special,” said Matthew Goudeau, Executive Director of Arts and Culture. “Rhodessa has spent decades making sure stories that might otherwise go unheard are seen, heard, and remembered. This Emmy honors her remarkable legacy, and it also recognizes the extraordinary talent of the people working in City government to tell the stories of the artists who make San Francisco what it is.”

Artistic Legacy Grant funds supported Jones in creating a cataloged archive documenting 50 years of her performances and theatrical works. The archive organizes and preserves her artistic legacy while providing a foundation for a new phase of her career as a solo artist. The project culminated in a two-day public retrospective of her career, “The Rhodessa Festival.”

The Emmy® is the third major award for the “Rhodessa Jones – A Cultural Odyssey” video production. In August 2025, production received an Award of Excellence in the Arts and Entertainment Campaign category at the 2025 NATOA Government Programming Awards. The production also received first place recognition in the 2025 CAPIO STAR Awards for Arts + Entertainment.

Gene Friend Recreation Center is now open!

The recreation center’s public art program contains 13 permanent works of art, including 12 purchased two-dimensional artworks on display along the building’s interior corridors and one commissioned, large-scale, and architecturally integrated artwork located in the gymnasium that honors well-known local leaders, veterans, elders, immigrants, and youth.

Gene Friend Rec Center’s public art program was made possible through the Arts Commission’s 2%-for-Art Program.

Works include a new site-specific commissioned work is titled Barrio Fiesta, by artist Cece Caprio and the two-dimensional artwork program includes works by 12 Bay Area-based artists: Mel Vera Cruz, Cherisse Alcantara, Rina Ayuyang, ChiChai Mateo, Kimberley Arteche, Johanna Poethig, Favianna Rodriguez, Jerome Reyes, Cristine Blanco, Leo Bersamina, Charlene Tan, and Kija Lucas.
