Thank you to everyone who joined us in celebrating the 35th anniversary of Ukraine’s independence and showing solidarity with Ukraine and its people in Sacramento!
The gathering, organized by The Sunflower Society and the Ukrainian American House, brought together the Sacramento-area Ukrainian community, friends of Ukraine, civic leaders, faith communities, local organizations, and volunteers.
Major General Matthew Beevers of the California National Guard and the representative of the Consulate General of Ukraine in San Francisco, Consul Oleksii Khorosh, addressed participants. The community received greetings from California Governor Gavin Newsom, whose letter Patricia Utterback read to the audience. Congressman Kevin Kiley attended in person and presented the organizers with a Congressional Certificate of Recognition.
A moment of silence, introduced by Ruslan Husarov, honored all Ukrainian heroes who have sacrificed their lives for Ukraine’s freedom and independence.
Throughout the event, Ukrainian nonprofits, businesses, and churches offered children’s activities and support for families. Sunflower Society also presented a Ukrainian cultural exhibition featuring vintage and contemporary items from the private collections of Olha Herasymenko, Svitlana Kryshtafovych, Svitlana Petrusha, and Olga Noshyn.
A memorial tent paid tribute to Ukrainians killed in Russia’s war against Ukraine. Participants who had lost friends or family members were invited to write their names on a Ukrainian flag and light a candle in their memory.
The commemoration concluded with an interfaith prayer and the traditional “Prayer for Ukraine,” performed by the choir of Holy Trinity Ukrainian Orthodox Church.
Our sincere appreciation goes to every volunteer, partner, community organization, and participant who helped make this meaningful event possible!

Consul Oleksii Khorosh expressed his sincere gratitude to Mayor Lisa Gillmor, members of the City Council, Santa Clara residents, and all organizations and activists who helped make this meaningful occasion possible, and reaffirmed their support for Ukraine.

We extend special thanks to the Ukrainian National Women’s League of America, UNWLA Branch 107, for its continued advocacy and dedicated support for Ukraine throughout the Bay Area.

The Embassy of Ukraine in the USA urges the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra to cancel the participation of Russian violinist Vadim Repin in the upcoming “Forces of Nature” concerts on November 6–7 at Maryland Hall.

The decision to invite Mr. Repin raises serious concerns given his documented involvement in Russian state-sponsored and state-linked cultural initiatives.

On February 21, 2024, Mr. Repin performed with the State Kremlin Orchestra at a concert organized by the Kremlin Foundation for Defender of the Fatherland Day, explicitly framed as a tribute to Russia’s “great defenders.”

Since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the Vadim Repin Foundation for the Development of the Arts has received substantial funding from the Russian Presidential Fund for Cultural Initiatives, a state-established institution supporting Russia’s cultural policy.

Several cultural institutions have already reconsidered their collaboration with Mr. Repin, including the Mannheim Philharmonic Orchestra in Germany, the Hungarian National Philharmonic Orchestra, and the Palm Beach Symphony in Florida, which canceled Mr. Repin’s performance in March this year.

We hope the Annapolis Symphony Orchestra will give these concerns careful consideration and reaffirm the solidarity with Ukraine it demonstrated in 2022, when it withdrew Mr. Repin from its program and replaced his performance with a musical tribute to Ukraine.
