The California State Senate adopted a Taiwan-friendly resolution co-authored by Senator Steven Choi, Vice Chair of the Senate Local Government Committee, and Senator Jerry McNerney, Chair of the Senate Revenue and Taxation Committee on June 18. The resolution commemorates the 30th anniversary of Taiwan’s first direct presidential election and the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, highlighting Taiwan’s resilience and steadfast commitment to democratic values. It also recognizes that Taiwan’s democracy is vital to peace and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region. This marks the third consecutive year, following 2024 and 2025, that the California Legislature has passed a resolution in support of Taiwan.

The resolution first commemorates the 42nd anniversary of the sister-state relationship between Taiwan and California and the 26th anniversary of Taiwanese American Heritage Week. It praises the close friendship and cooperation between Taiwan and California across trade, technology, education, tourism, and cultural exchanges. The resolution also recognizes the Taiwanese American community’s steadfast support for democracy, human rights, and the rule of law, as well as its remarkable resilience and commitment to democratic values, which continue to inspire people throughout California and around the world.

The resolution further notes that Taiwan is California’s third-largest trading partner, second-largest export market, and third-largest source of imports. In light of these strong economic ties, the Senate acknowledges the Taiwanese community’s longstanding and invaluable contributions to California’s economic growth and development. In addition, the resolution recognizes Taiwan’s ability and willingness to contribute to the international community and expresses support for Taiwan’s meaningful participation in international organizations, including the United Nations, World Health Organization, International Civil Aviation Organization, INTERPOL, and the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change. The California State Senate expressed its support for Taiwan’s contributions to the international community through appropriate means and encouraged the California state government to expand cooperation with Taiwan across a broader range of areas.

Unlike the resolutions adopted in the previous two years, this year’s resolution specifically highlights the significance of 2026 as both the 30th anniversary of Taiwan’s first direct presidential election and the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States, describing the year as a dual celebration of major democratic milestones. The Senate also noted that 2026 marks the 47th anniversary of the Taiwan Relations Act, which has helped maintain peace, security, and stability in the Western Pacific while fostering deeper commercial, cultural, and other ties between the peoples of Taiwan and the United States. The resolution concludes by affirming that Taiwan’s democracy is essential to maintaining peace and prosperity throughout the Asia-Pacific region.

The San Francisco Bay Area has become one of the world's most important startup and innovation hubs. To help foster connections and strengthen exchanges among venture capital, entrepreneurship, and innovation leaders across the region, TECO in San Francisco hosted an Executive Venture Capital Roundtable on Tuesday, June 16.

The event attracted a dynamic group of emerging entrepreneurs, investors, and technology leaders from across the Bay Area. Participants engaged in meaningful discussions, shared new perspectives on entrepreneurship and innovation, and explored opportunities for future collaboration.

Director-General David Wu delivered a presentation entitled “Why Taiwan Matters,” highlighting Taiwan's critical role in the global economy and technology ecosystem. DG Wu noted that this was the first event of its kind organized by our office, bringing together some of the Bay Area's most influential technology operators, founders, and investors. The gathering was aimed at strengthening cross-border collaboration, advancing global innovation, and expanding civic engagement and influence within both the public and private sectors in the San Francisco Bay Area.

In addition to DG Wu's presentation, representatives from the Taiwan Trade Center ( TAITRA), the Startup Island Taiwan in Silicon Valley, and the Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) introduced the many ways in which the Taiwan government supports entrepreneurs, startups, and investors seeking opportunities in Taiwan. Their presentations highlighted initiatives designed to encourage investment, foster innovation, and create mutually beneficial partnerships between Taiwan and California.
The roundtable served as an important platform for strengthening ties among the Taiwanese-American innovation community while further promoting Taiwan as a key partner in the global startup ecosystem.
