This bill puts thousands of families at risk.
AB 647 will put more people on the street, as it allows over 100 agencies to tow and destroy RVs that are deemed “abandoned”, with no clear definition of "abandoned."
Across California, families have lived in RV’s to survive sky high rents without resorting to crowded shelter beds or aging single-room units.
More than 80% of families experiencing homelessness in San Francisco live in vehicles. In LA County, 39% of unhoused people live in their vehicles. In Alameda, it's over half. Injustice anywhere is injustice everywhere.
Now, AB 647, which is designed to tow & destroy “abandoned RV’s” threatens to turn a short time away from shelter into a life-changing (and expensive) legal decision.
Rather than punishing vehicle-housed families, we believe in Housing First solutions, like Safe Parking sites & dedicated resources, to help families connect to services & housing that enable them to safely move out of RVs.
The power to veto this measure now falls in Governor Newsom’s hands.
La Raza CRC joined 40+ orgs demanding a veto. We need you to do the same.
Share this post, and encourage Governor Newsom to VETO AB 647, because families don’t deserve to see their only form of housing destroyed.
