There is one thing this city has no shortage of... broken elevators! Tenants across the city are struggling when elevators break because they often take a long time to repair, leaving tenants on the upper floors stranded. Read this story to understand the damage this can cause.

If your building is suffering from elevator issues, document the issue with photos and writing and report it to the Department of Building Inspections. And talk to your neighbors! Organizing is one of the best ways to get landlords to make building-wide repairs.

Alice Griffith residents have been raising concerns for years about unsafe and deteriorating living conditions, including pest infestations, broken elevators, and serious repair issues. A new $9 million settlement will require major improvements, but residents are clear that accountability cannot stop there. HRCSF has been working alongside Alice Griffith residents to document conditions, file complaints with DBI, and push for meaningful repairs. Residents have seen resources come into the community before without all of the underlying problems being addressed, so the focus now must be on making sure this settlement leads to real, lasting improvements and safe, healthy homes for the people who live there.

Lately, we have noticed a lot of fires happening in corporate landlord owned buildings. Why?

These fires point to the trend we see from corporate landlords of general disinvestment in the maintenance of the buildings, who see buildings as symbols of investments and capital more than homes of real people.

To prevent fires and stay protected, tenants should get their landlords to keep light wells clear and document any trash or debris anywhere it shouldn't be in their building.
