The SFMTA’s Livable Streets team leads our agency’s crucial mission of making San Francisco a better, safer place to walk and bike. As part of our efforts to share more of that work and expand the conversation about safer streets, we’re making some changes to our social media channels. On October 28...

Recently, an advocacy group called SFMTrA installed their own safe hit posts along a section of the John F. Kennedy Drive bike lane at the eastern entrance to Golden Gate Park. Because the city is moving towards smaller street sweepers, we'll be able to leave these unofficial posts in place until we can install our own.

This is a huge win for SFMTrA, which illegally installed the posts early last week. The city plans to leave the posts in until officials can install permanent ones.

An SFPD officer uses a LIDAR device to measure driver speeds on Folsom Street in SoMa. The next step in our city’s Safe Streets SF campaign starts in October with a new initiative to bring more strategic enforcement to curb speeding - and study its effectiveness - on San Francisco’s most speed-prone...

Upcoming community meeting regarding proposals for 7th and 8th Street:

7th Street and 8th Street Safety Projects Open House: 5:30 p.m., Thursday, Sept. 22
Bayanihan Community Center
1010 Mission Street x. 6th Street
Nearby Muni Routes: 14 Mission, F Market, Metro-Civic Center Station

7th and 8th streets are intersected by multiple high injury corridors on San Francisco’s High Injury Network, which is the 12 percent of city streets that account for 70 percent of San Francisco’s traffic crashes. They are busy, one-way streets that are crucial to keeping San Francisco moving. This project will make these streets safer and more comfortable for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers.

SFMTA staff will provide details on the project and discuss how a planned re-route of the 19 Polk will make it safer and quicker through the SoMa and Civic Center neighborhoods. Staff will also gather feedback on how parking and loading can be better managed.

You can visit the project webpage for more information or to sign up for email updates.

Big improvements in our bikeway network are underway and on their way: https://www.sfmta.com/about-sfmta/blog/new-generation-bikeways-coming-san-francisco

You should be able to ride a bike in safety, whether you’re 20 years old, eight or 80. That’s the vision we’re working towards, and the only way we’re going to get there is by building safer streets that offer more protection for people biking. In support of Mayor Ed Lee’s recent Executive Directive...
