This week we are spotlighting one of our favorite and easiest itineraries in the city, and it might just be the most scenic 0.3 miles you have ever experienced.

They're back!

The Elegant Terns have returned to Crissy Marsh and if you know, you know. If you don't, this is your sign to find out.

Every fall, one of San Francisco's most breathtaking natural spectacles plays out right here at the edge of the Presidio. Crissy Marsh, a 20-acre restored wetland sitting at the crossroads of the Presidio's largest watershed and the waters of the Bay becomes a rest stop on the Pacific Flyway, the ancient migratory superhighway stretching from the Arctic all the way to South America. And the Elegant Terns are among the most striking travelers passing through.

Bring binoculars. Wear layers. Walk the boardwalk and let the marsh (and the birds) do the rest.

Want to know which trail in the Presidio smells the best? Yes, you read that correctly.

The Lobos Creek Valley Trail smells like an expensive candle you’d find in a fancy little shop… except this one is free, and the scent is completely natural. It’s the beach sagewort, doing its thing like it has for thousands of years. On cool, foggy late-summer mornings, the scent can just hang in the air. If only Instagram had a scratch n' sniff option!

The Lobos Creek Valley Trail is a short, easy boardwalk through a restored dune ecosystem. It was restored in 1994, and today it’s one of those surprisingly wild corners of San Francisco that feels a world away.

Close your eyes for a second.

Waves hitting the shore in a steady, unhurried rhythm. Coastal gulls calling somewhere overhead. Children laughing in the distance. The soft crunch of sand under your feet as you walk toward the water.

Nobody told us Presidio Pop Up was going to hit like this. 🤤

Visualize this - you show up for a walk in a national park site and suddenly you're choosing between Dungeness crab rolls, Mexican birria tacos, a bacon Cuban sandwich, and a poke bowl that might ruin every other poke bowl for you. With the Golden Gate Bridge in the background. For lunch.

More than two dozen local vendors rotating daily, celebrating the full flavor of the Bay Area in one place. Weekdays 9 a.m.–3 p.m., weekends 9 a.m.-5:30 p.m., around Presidio Tunnel Tops and the Visitor Center.

September might be the best kept secret of the Presidio calendar.

The fog lifts, the light turns golden, and somehow the park feels both quieter and more alive at the same time. If you've been waiting for the right moment to visit - or come back - this is it.

But first, a gentle nudge: three remarkable exhibitions are closing mid-September and they're absolutely worth seeing before they go.

Happiest Place on Earth: Walt's Disneyland at The Walt Disney Family Museum offers a rare and intimate look inside the imagination of one of the most iconic creative minds of the 20th century. I Am An American: The Nisei Soldier Experience honors the Japanese American soldiers who served with extraordinary courage during World War II despite unimaginable injustice at home. And EXCLUSION at the Presidio Officers' Club examines the Presidio's own role in the incarceration of 120,000 Japanese Americans. All three close mid-month.

Then stay for everything else September has in store. The World Arts West Dance Festival brings world dance and live music to the park. The Bay Area Chuseok Festival celebrates Korean harvest culture in one of the most beautiful outdoor settings in the city. Access to Adventure Day opens the park to adaptive outdoor recreation - a celebration of the belief that this national park site truly belongs to everyone, regardless of ability.

Starting Sunday, September 13, enjoy Free Sunday yoga, which continues through the month of November 22. And don't miss the special 250th Anniversary Ranger Talks at the Presidio Visitor Center - where they're telling the story of this place with the depth and care it deserves - and the Presidio Chapel’s Commemoration of the Presidio’s 250th at Presidio Chapel.

This extraordinary free award-winning exhibition is leaving the Presidio Officers Club September 13. You still have time to see it.

Currently on view is EXCLUSION, which examines the role the Presidio, then a U.S. Army post, played in the incarceration of Japanese Americans during World War II.
