Tonight, September 10 at Lone Star Saloon (1354 Harrison Street) within the South of Market's LEATHER & LGBTQ Cultural District! From 5-7 pm, we'll gather at this historic spot that is credited with launching in the 1980s and 1990s the now-global “bear” subculture among gay men. It draws visitors from all over the world, and we're heading there during Folsom Street Fair month in San Francisco!

On Saturday & Sunday, September 5-6, from 11 am - 2 pm each day, SF Heritage will open the storm doors at the Haas-Lilienthal House(2007 Franklin Street) for Doors Open California, a statewide celebration of historic places. This California Preservation Foundation program coordinates open days to over 75 sites for historic architecture, design, and cultural heritage enthusiasts, who will experience our Queen Anne Victorian’s remarkably-preserved parlor, bedroom, and ballroom spaces and gain insights into 19th century Victorian life in San Francisco.

We’ll also have a dedicated spot where you can learn more about joining our new cohort of volunteer docents, the heart of public house tours at the city's only house museum of the period.

This is a great opportunity to take friends and family to the HLH and pair it with a visit to another participating SF or Bay Area site—our event is free, but you can purchase a Doors Open registration for just $20 to access 2026 sites around the state! https://californiapreservation.org/doca/

🧱Clinker Brick and Community🧑‍🧒‍🧒

Thank you to legacy business Donaldina Cameron House in Chinatown for co-hosting our third Page Memorial Lecture of the year on August 26! Inside this post-1906 earthquake clicker brick landmark, guests had some myths refuted about said clicker brick architecture across the city, and learned about the evolution—and nuances of 19th century San Francisco as the historic backdrop of its founding—of this over 150-year old service organization.

Our Special City members were also treated to a special building tour through Cameron House's historic parlors, tunnel spaces in the basement, and postcard-worthy views from their famous basketball court. A shoutout also to Signs By Meng for designing this one-of-a kind poster for our members!

HP Giant Crane🏗

Back in June, our Special City "Where am I?" answer spotlighted the Giant Crane at Hunter's Point Shipyard, the 8,400 ton steel structure constructed in 1947 that was able to lift and swap massive gun turrets for battleships.

This underappreciated resource is a true San Francisco landmark, but has no official protection in redevelopment plans for the shipyard site. SF Heritage joins neighbors, artists, and historians to call for the Crane's addition to the Hunters Point Commercial Drydock Historic District, which was listed in the National Register of Historic Places in 2012.

Artist Stacey Carter, who features the Crane in much of her own work, will be giving a history talk about it this Saturday, August 29 at 2 pm. This is great opportunity to visit the Shipyard Artists Gallery at Hunters Point Shipyard and learn about how the world’s largest crane became an engineering marvel, a key player in Cold War missile testing, and an enduring monument to the workers and community of the Shipyard.

Starting tomorrow! World-class magician and storyteller Steve Marshall inites you inside the Haas-Lilienthal House for Echoes from the Past—an intimate journey through our magnificent Victorian landmark where "history, mystery, and magic begin to blur."

Guests will move through the house in intimate groups, hearing stories and encountering strange objects, forgotten photographs, Victorian mysteries, and impossible moments that can’t quite be explained.
