Carl is a crewmember aboard the Jeremiah O’Brien who made the Normandy Trip for the 50th Anniversary of D-Day. I have enjoyed many a conversation with him, and at 92 years old he really deserves his retirement. I’ll miss his columns in the Chronicle, but I’m sure he will make time for the ship once in a while…

She's a Grand Old Flag, she's a high flying flag and forever in peace may she wave!
She's the emblem of the Land I Love, the home of the free and the brave.
Every heart beats true under red, white and blue where there's never a boast or brag,
So may auld acquaintance be forgot, keep you eye on the Grand Old Flag!
From the Jeremiah O'Brien to you, keep your eye on the grand old flag! And never give up the ship!

Brought to My Attention:

"Copied from M.E.B.A. Telex:

FOURTH ARM OF DEFENSE CELEBRATES 251
While the country gets ready to celebrate 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the Fourth Arm of Defense is one year older.

On Friday, June 12, the U.S. Merchant Marine turns 251 years old. It hearkens back to the struggle of the 13 colonies to win their independence from Great Britain. Without a strong Navy, the colonies relied on privately-owned commercial ships and their crews to serve as privateers. The Battle of the Margaretta was a small but significant sea battle at the start of the American Revolution. It took place on June 11–12, 1775, near what is now Machias, Maine. After local patriots seized a British supply ship, they pursued the armed British schooner HMS MARGARETTA. Led by local militia captain Jeremiah O’Brien, the Americans boarded and captured the vessel after a fierce fight. The battle demonstrated that American merchant seamen could play a direct role in defending the colonies and supporting the revolutionary cause. Throughout the Revolutionary War, merchant mariners carried supplies, served as privateers, and transported troops and cargo, making them an essential component of the war effort.

In the World War II era, when President Franklin D. Roosevelt referred to the Merchant Marine as the “Fourth Arm of Defense,” the U.S. had the Army, Navy, and Marine Corps as distinct services. The Air Corps/Army Air Forces operated as part of the Army and was the military aviation service. Calling the U.S. Merchant Marine the “fourth arm” placed it alongside the fighting services as an essential element of national defense because it provides the transportation network needed to support the armed forces in both peace and war."

With so many animal lovers on the ship, I just want to assure everyone that Shadow, Steve Wright's cat is doing fine.
Steve is gone, we are in shock and miss him so much but we can feel some comfort that his adored feline companion Shadow is being well taken care of by Steve's close-knit neighbors.
Just wanted to let you all know...

D-Day 82nd Anniversary

"On the Jeremiah O'Brien, the deafening roar of planes and the sight of the greatest armada in history raised a fever desire in many who saw it to rush out and be apart of the historic day. Others pale with fear. Some sat, silently writing letters or alone with their thoughts." In a excerpt from The Last Liberty, Captain Walter Jaffee described the mood of the O'Brien crew on D-Day. Today we remember one of the most important days in history. A day when American, British, Canadian and Free French forces came together for the Invasion of Normandy, a day the participants would never forget. Although the SS Jeremiah O'Brien was not at Normandy on June 6th, she would arrive on June 10th off of Omaha Beach. The O'Brien would sail back and forth carrying supplies for the Allied armies. She would fulfill this role until September 1944. In all during her 11 trips over three months to Omaha and Utah beaches the O'Brien carried 3,492 troops, 1,746 vehicles, 14 police dogs, 117 tons of special cargo and 341 tons of dynamite. In honor of those who survived and those who lost their lives in the first step in liberating Europe from a totalitarian dictator and would eventually bring to an end the Third Reich and the war in Europe, we salute you and will never forget your sacrifice.

This Saturday, June 6th the SS Jeremiah O'Brien will be open to veterans and active duty military at no charge. Please bring DD-214 or military ID. No ceremony, no speeches, - just an open gangway and working Liberty ship for the people who understand what the date means...

For WWII & history Geeks 'PRESSURE' In movie theaters now!
"It’s astonishing to consider that D-Day could have failed and the Allies could have ultimately lost World War II, all due to a weather forecast. Those small moments mean everything. Pressure understands that, and seriously engages with the idea of honorable people up against impossible problems. This is one of the best films of the year" writes Tim Brennan, movie critic.

"It is the type of film that is about what makes America great—politicians depending on the experts. True account of what helped build our great nation & the sacrifices made for our freedom." writes Carole H

Now showing at your local movie theater, if you are a WWII history geek (and who reading this page isn't...) go see it!
A Visit to Local Liberty Ship SS Jeremiah O'Brien is a perfect way to commemorate D-Day on June 6th. This incredible ship made 11 trips to the Normandy beaches at Utah and Omaha in 1944 to shuttle soldiers, trucks, food and supplies to support the D-Day Invasion! And she still sails thanks to her crew of dedicated volunteers!

Allies Capture U-505

On this day in 1944, the German U-Boat U-505 was captured by U.S. Navy Task Group 22.3. It was the first time since the War of 1812 that the US Navy had seized an enemy warship intact. Although the allies had already broken the enigma code, the enigma machine and other important documents found on the U-505 were important in the intelligence side of the Battle of the Atlantic. The submarine was towed to Bermuda secretly and her crew was isolated in a POW camp in Louisiana. In 1954, the U-505 was donated to the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry. Much work had to be done on the interior and exterior. Initially the sub was displayed outside until 2004, when it was moved inside. In 2019, the sub was refurbished and a special exhibit was added telling the story of the Battle of the Atlantic and the history of the U-505.

Now that we're tied up to Pier 35, you are invited to view the fireworks on the Fourth of July from aboard the deck of this historic ship. It is very close to the barge shooting off the fireworks, you can't find a better spot to view the fireworks AND support our ship..
A giant THANK YOU to all who sailed from our volunteer crew!

We are broken hearted to post that our friend and wonderful ship keeper Steve Wright crossed the bar yesterday. Maybe it was fitting that he left us when we were out sailing on our May Memorial Cruise, although he wasn't able to come along physically. He was always with us and lives in our hearts, Steve we will always remember you.
Another angel has joined the heavenly ranks of the Jeremiah O'Brien.
