Year after year, San Franciscans cite homelessness as one of their top concerns. Yet, many San Franciscans struggle to understand why homelessness persists, and even more are at a loss as to what we need to do to end it (all the more so during the pandemic).
Join us to explore these questions during our virtual event on Thursday, December 17: A Direction Home-What Will It Take To Solve Homelessness During COVID-19? We’ll be talking with national and local experts who are leading policy and programs to solve homelessness.
We'll dive deep into homelessness—and the actions being taken to solve this issue as COVID spikes and winter hits. And most importantly, we'll discover what our part of the solution is and why solutions to homelessness begin with you and me.

Matthew Doherty
Former Executive Director States Interagency Council on Homelessness
Matthew Doherty has nearly 30 years of leadership experience in both the private and public sectors, focused on ending homelessness and the creation and integration of housing, services programs, and economic opportunities. Through his consulting practice, Matthew now provides expert guidance to national, state, and local organizations seeking effective solutions to housing needs and homelessness. Matthew most recently served from 2015 to 2019 as the Executive Director for the United States Interagency Council on Homelessness (USICH), the federal agency charged with coordinating the federal response to homelessness and with creating national public-private partnerships to end homelessness across the nation.
Shanell Williams
President City Our Home Committee
Shanell Williams is the Director of Community Engagement for the California Preterm Birth Initiative at UCSF, a member of the Board of Trustees at City College of San Francisco, and President of the Our City, Our Home Oversight Committee. That Committee is charged with oversight of the 2018 Prop C ballot measure funds and making funding recommendations to the Board of Supervisors to significantly reduce homelessness in San Francisco. Over the past 20 years, Shanell has served thousands of San Franciscans as an informed, passionate and dedicated public advocate, nonprofit leader and community organizer. She has worked for numerous nonprofit agencies and labor organizations dedicated to serving marginalized, low-income communities such as: the Center for Young Women’s Development, Youth Leadership Institute, UNITE HERE Local 2, Jobs with Justice SF, and Urban Services YMCA to name a few.
Stephany Ashley
Northern California Director of Housing Services Corners
Stephany Ashley is the Northern California Director of Housing Services at Brilliant Corners, a statewide nonprofit supportive housing provider. She is the former Executive Director of the St. James Infirmary, the nation’s only healthcare and social service agency by and for the s*x worker community, and she currently serves on the Leadership Team of the TGI Justice Project. She has been active in San Francisco politics, serving as President of the Harvey Milk LGBT Democratic Club, as a Legislative Aide to former Supervisor David Campos, and as a Campaign Manager and Communications Consultant for various local campaigns. Prior to joining Brilliant Corners, she worked on Tipping Point Community’s Chronic Homelessness Initiative.
