🏠 Housing is the test.

Our partners at the Council of Community Housing Organizations are naming something critical in this moment: California isn’t poor — we’re unequal.
In this powerful piece, Quintin Mecke makes the case that the housing crisis isn’t just about scarcity. It’s about whether we’re willing to act—and whether those who have benefited most from our state’s growth are willing to contribute to real solutions.
Winning new funding measures or passing policies alone won’t solve the crisis overnight. But they do prove something essential: that we can still come together to demand accountability, invest in our communities, and build a future where everyone has a place to call home.

At Build Affordable Faster California, we believe that means:
✅ Building more—including deeply affordable homes
âś… Securing the funding that makes affordability possible
âś… Standing up for policies that match the scale of the crisis

This is about more than housing. It’s about what kind of California we want to be.

We are not poor. We are unequal. And the people who benefit from that confusion are spending tens of millions to keep it that way.

A HISTORIC win for equitable growth—and for an affordable San Francisco.

Put forth by progressive housing organizations Council of Community Housing Organizations and the San Francisco Community Land Trust and carried forward by city leaders, this proposal would expand the Housing Trust Fund from $52 million to $125 million a year, lock in affordable housing funding through 2058, and support a $70 million bond to preserve homes before families are pushed out. This is the kind of community centric, long-term investment our city needs: more homes, more stability, and a future where working families, seniors, young people, and tenants can all belong in San Francisco.

Growth must benefit everyone, not just the wealthy, who already have plenty of help. Backed by community voices and partners who believe in a more inclusive city, this moment proves that progress can—and must—be shared.

Power doesn’t just live at City Hall—it lives with us the people.

In San Francisco, residents have the ability to turn ideas into action through one of the strongest ballot initiative processes in the country. That means when our community sees a problem, we don’t have to wait—we can organize, mobilize, and create change together.

This is one of the many things that make our city so unique.

At Build Affordable Faster California, we believe in uplifting voices — because informed, engaged communities are powerful communities.

Come along and learn more about how our city works—and how you can be part of shaping its future.
