NICC’s September 1 wildfire outlook is out. Oregon/Washington and northern-eastern California stay above normal significant fire potential this month. Southern California, Arizona/New Mexico, and Montana sit near/normal, although the Southwest is still shaking off lingering drought and dry fuels early on.
Nationally, 2026 acreage burned is running at 166% of the 10-year average, with drought covering nearly 57% of the country.
Above normal or not, fuel reduction work doesn’t pause.
