On Tuesday, June 16, 2026, we invite you to join us as we traverse San Francisco in collaboration with the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency and the San Francisco Public Library.

Our mobile event will connect James Joyce’s legendary "Ulysses" with the legacy of Michael O’Shaughnessy, the Irish-born city engineer whose visionary work created Muni and shaped the everyday lives of San Franciscans.

Join us for Irish book giveaways and talks along the L Taraval Line, connecting the Consulate General of Ireland and the United Irish Cultural Center, Inc. (with some fun stops along the way).

Earlier this Spring, we hosted our 2nd Citizenship Ceremony to acknowledge and celebrate those who have acquired Irish citizenship through the Foreign Births Registry.

57 celebrated citizens, joined by friends and family, enjoyed remarks from our visiting Minister of Agriculture, Martin Heydon. Former congressmen Bruce Morrison also joined our celebration. Morrison is most notable amongst the Irish community for developing a visa program in the 1980’s that allowed thousands of Irish to come to the U.S. We were also joined by representatives from the Irish Immigration Pastoral Centre and the Irish Network Bay Area.

The Consulate General of Ireland in San Francisco, the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade, and the Foreign Birth Registry Office recognise and celebrate the lives, legacies and contributions of those who obtained their citizenships through the Foreign Birth Registry.

On Wednesday, Vice Consul Naoise Kenny traveled to Seattle, Washington, to meet with the Irish Abroad Unit and local Irish community leaders to discuss and promote the Emigrant Support Programme (ESP).

In Seattle, Vice Consul Kenny met with key ESP partners, including the Irish Heritage Club, Seattle, the Irish Network Seattle and the Seattle Gaels. These organizations are foundational to the vibrant Irish diaspora in Seattle and act as vital resources for the Irish community there.

Consul General Micheál Smith was delighted to visit Butte, Montana, for a series of engagements focused on the connections between Ireland and Montana, and highlighting the strong economic reciprocity between Ireland and the United States.

It was especially fitting that the Montana World Trade Center’s World Trade and Investment Day 2026 took place in Butte, one of the most Irish places in the United States. The event brought together business, government and community leaders for training sessions, panel discussions and keynote remarks on international trade and investment in a rapidly changing global landscape.

During the forum, the CG spoke about Ireland’s commitment to deepening trade and investment links with Montana, working with both public and private sector partners, and Ireland’s role as a bridge between the US and Europe. The forum also featured an address by Governor Greg Gianforte.

Thanks to Brigitta Miranda-Freer, Executive Director of the Montana World Trade Center; Sarah Quigley, Consul General of Canada; Marta Bertoglio, Director of the Montana Department of Commerce; Jillien Streit, Director of the Montana Department of Agriculture; and H. Delano Roosevelt, among others.

While in Butte, he also met with J.P. Gallagher, CEO of the The City-County of Butte-Silver Bow; Con Sullivan and Aubrey Jaap at the Butte-Silver Bow Public Archives; State Senator Mike Cuffe; and former Montana State Senator Jim Keane. Their discussions focused on the deep Irish heritage of Butte, the continuing strength of the local Irish community, and opportunities to build new partnerships between Ireland and Montana.

The visit also provided a welcome opportunity to meet many members of the local Irish-American community, including representatives of the Wolfe Tones Na Sionna GAA Club, the Ancient Order Of Hibernians, those building links with Allihies in Cork as well as a visit to Shawn O’Donnell’s, a much-loved local favourite, owned and run by Armagh man “Irish Johnny.”
