Last month, we stuffed 375 backpacks with school supplies and gave them out to TK–5th graders at Ibarra Elementary School in City Heights. To students, a new backpack is more than just school supplies: it brings confidence, opportunity, and the realization that their community cares about their success.

When we invest in children’s education early, we help lay the foundation for lifelong financial security– and it truly takes a community to open those doors.

Thanks to our generous partners at Navy Federal Credit Union, HD Supply, Eli Lilly and Company, Equity Residential, Microbiologics, Embolden, MyPoint Credit Union, and Collins Aerospace (RTX) for making this event possible.

Meet Jovany. Through United Way of San Diego County’s SparkPoint program and our partners at Lifeline Community Services, he connected with a trained financial coach who helped turn his goals into a plan for a stronger financial future.

With one-on-one coaching, Jovany gained the tools, knowledge, and confidence to build toward financial security for himself and his son.

SparkPoint is about more than finances. It’s about creating possibilities, building stability, and helping families take meaningful steps toward a future where opportunity is within reach. Because when families have a stronger financial foundation, they can build a future that lasts for generations.

Inspiring the next generation of healthcare leaders! As part of our Dream with STEAM summer career exploration program, Escondido High School students visited Rady Children's Health in San Diego to discover the wide array of careers in healthcare. They also learned about life-saving cardiac care and got hands-on experience taking vital signs alongside San Diego State University School of Nursing students.

Shoutout to Ryan Morris for representing United Way of San Diego County at the 2026 United Way Western Regional Conference in Portland, Oregon, this August! Ryan joined Andar, a CRM and fundraising platform United Way uses to manage donor information, giving, designations, reporting, and other critical fundraising operations, to deliver an insightful presentation to United Way professionals across the region, sharing his expertise and perspective on technology, data, and innovation.

A valued, longtime member of the UWSD team, Ryan has been with UWSD for over 22 years and serves as our Senior Director of IT & Business Architecture, bringing experience across nonprofit technology, data strategy, information management, software training, and technology implementation. His unique blend of technical expertise and strategic thinking helps organizations leverage technology and data to strengthen their work and better serve their communities.
