Some would say, that the true Naval Fighter Jock died with the retirement of the F-14 Tomcat. The reality is, since it's inception, the Naval Fighter aircraft has always been used as a multi-role aircraft. With the transition to the F-14, the Sundowners unknowingly had reached the pinnacle of their own destiny. The F-14 was designed as the ultimate top cover fleet defender, who proudly served it's

role seeing through to the anti-climactic end of the Cold War. As it's entire purpose for existence, had suddenly vanished, even the mighty Tomcat, eventually was given the mission of flinging bombs at ground targets. Just Shy of the 20 year mark, the US Navy in all it's profound wisdom decided to Disband the Squadron. VF-111,s story come to a Close on 31 March 1995.
