This project is dedicated to the people that lived and worked in San Diego’s East Village in the 80’s, 90’s +. It is a collage of anecdotes, experiences and recollections from architects, artists and everyday people. The purpose of this project is to have an online record of an era that deeply touched everyone that had a part in the life and creation of one of San Diego’s Iconic landmarks. If you

lived, worked, created art or simply enjoyed the East Village, we invite you to send us your profile and become part of this online community. This site also welcomes comments and suggestions and it encourages an open dialogue as is also part of a work in progress.

A couple of weeks ago we met a few great friends at Nunu's Tavern in Hillcrest, most of us haven't seen each other in quite sometime and also had the pleasure of meeting new friends. Mark Hiss is one of the new friends and we chatted about San Diego's East Village, he recently sent a good number of photos and PDF's about his writing and editing from back in the day.
Below is his bio and some of the images from various events.
I'm currently working on adding his PDF's to the website but couldn't wait to share my excitement.
Thank you all!

Mark Hiss Lloreda is a writer and editor who has worked in and around San Diego arts and culture for many years. He began his career at the Old Globe Theatre, San Diego REPertory Theatre and Broadway San Diego. He was then founding editor of two publications: WHERE San Diego, a visitor guide focusing on arts, entertainment and dining, and Performances, the playbill magazine for Southern California’s leading performing arts groups. He is also the author of several guidebooks on San Diego and California, and was a longtime features writer and columnist for San Diego Home/Garden Lifestyles, interviewing scores of local artists, architects, designers and civic leaders. As a photographer, he spent the better part of a decade documenting performances at Sushi Performance & Visual Art, which formed the basis for his Sushi exhibition, “Field Recordings,” in 2000. Take a look! 🤘🤘 Rafael López!

Artist Rafael López used his upbringing in Mexico City for inspiration. It took two years of development before the set launched, and each stamp will carry on a cultural legacy forever.

Yesterday I went for lunch with my friend Ryan Chung at Hayes Burger in Barrio Logan... and was delighted to find a mural by Satoshi Rocco... painted in September 28, 2018.
Great burgers by the way. :)
Cheers!

Hi friends, great news! We were able to add a couple of new profiles to our website today. We'd like to thank Candice and Rafael Lopez for sending us their information and photos.
I took Candice's Graphic Design classes back in the 90's at City College and met Rafael one time at one of the Jacaranda studios for a small publication's article.
Here's Rafael's profile:
