New findings: San Diego County’s ongoing sewage crisis is costing our region approximately $125M to $503M annually & cumulatively, over the last 20 years, closer to $1.9B-$7.9B. What’s worse is that the burden falls disproportionately on the most economically vulnerable communities in the county, the hard working families of my district. Tune in TOMORROW to our Board of Supervisors meeting to watch the update from our staff on the Economic Impact Study we commissioned last year. https://sdcounty.legistar.com/View

I proudly stood alongside my colleagues, community leaders, labor advocates, and most importantly, the hard-working residents of San Diego County to announce an important step forward for worker rights and economic justice in our region. I am bringing forward a board letter designed to strengthen wage theft enforcement and recovery across San Diego County.

At its core, this policy is built on a simple, fundamental principle: every worker deserves to be treated with respect, and that starts with being paid fully and fairly for every single hour they work.

This initiative will…

1. Expand Capacity & Program Support
2. Strengthen Community Outreach
3. Enhance Legal Pathways

To every worker across San Diego County: today’s announcement sends a clear message. The County of San Diego values your dignity, respects your labor, and will stand up to ensure you keep every dollar you earn.

Repost: San Diego & Imperial Counties Labor Council Labor Day wasn’t given to us – it was chosen to distance us from May Day.

May 1 is the true international day of workers – born from the Haymarket Affair, when workers fought and died for the eight-hour day. That’s why the powers that be pushed Labor Day to September. They wanted a less militant, less radical day for workers.

But we haven’t forgotten. Hundreds of you showed up for May Day this year – marching, rallying, and building power.

So this Labor Day, we rest. But we rest knowing that we’ll need that energy for the fights ahead.

• Organizing our workplaces

• Fighting AI that replaces and surveils us

• Taking on billionaires who steal our wages and our futures

• Protecting our elections

• Electing pro-worker candidates and passing pro-worker measures in the midterms

Rest today. Fight tomorrow. Solidarity forever.

Families across San Diego County are living in fear, afraid to leave their homes. ICE removed more than 16,000 people from our region in just over a year, and since this administration took office, federal immigration agents have shot people at least 41 times and killed 11. Meanwhile, ICE and CBP have been training at County firing ranges, on property paid for by San Diego County taxpayers. The federal government cannot terrorize our families all week and rent our firing ranges on the weekend.

That’s why Chair Lawson-Remer and I are bringing forward a Board Letter to end these agreements. These facilities belong to the people of San Diego, and they should reflect our values. We stand with our families. We stand with our neighborhoods. Our County, our values. ¡AQUÍ NO!

Nuestro Condado, nuestros valores. ¡AQUÍ NO!

Our communities have made one thing crystal clear: we are tired of violent federal immigration enforcement tactics bringing fear, trauma, and intimidation into our neighborhoods. San Diegans should not be afraid to visit loved ones, go to work, see their doctor, or simply leave their homes because they fear they may not make it back safely.

Under these heavily militarized and aggressive tactics, families have suffered devastating and deadly tolls, including the lives of individuals like Renee Good, Alex Pretti, Lorenzo Salgado Araujo, and Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero. Enough is enough. San Diegans say ¡Aquí NO!

——————————————————

We’re so proud to support Richard Barrera for California Superintendent! He’s devoted his life to working families and as President of the San Diego Unified School District, he’s turned one of California’s largest districts into one of the highest performing in the country. We can’t wait to see him bring that change statewide.
