The Team
The Rancho Bernardo High School Speech and Debate Team is an up and coming forensics team in San Diego, California. RBHS Speech and Debate has a long and colorful history, and we will continue our legacy as one of the most distinguished forensics teams in San Diego County. Recently, we have regularly placed in the top 5 schools in sweeps (school rankings) at local tournaments during as w
e grew in size and strength. For the years of 2013-2014, we will grow stronger and even more connected as a team, and we will reach new heights. Speech and debate is not only an exceptionally fulfilling activity, but is also a great way to get recognized by colleges and universities. Higher education values speech and debate because it allows students to learn skills that they normally wouldn’t learn in a classroom, such as how to effectively communicate and articulate a point in a short, concise manner. These skills become invaluable not only in the classroom, but also in the workplace. For these reasons, our “Oral Interpretation” elective class also helps fulfill the Fine Art Requirement that your student needs to meet to graduate. Speech and debate also allows students to branch out into the community and make new friends outside of Rancho Bernardo, which helps them grow as individuals. Sounds great! How do I join? There are currently two ways to take part in Speech and Debate. The first is our elective class during the normal school day, called “Oral Interpretation”. This is the class that will help fulfill your fine art requirement for graduation. To switch into this class, all you have to do is talk to your counselor, and they will be able to switch you in. A note for parents: Health does not need to be taken during freshman year. It is possible to take it during any school year and also during the summer as an online course. In addition to our normal elective class, we also hold an after school class during the “6.5 period,” which will function as an extension of the Oral Interpretation elective. This class does not need to be taken in conjunction with “Oral Interpretation”, but it is highly recommended that “Oral Interpretation” students also take this class because the class will be used to help any students that want further coaching and to give students time and help to prepare for tournaments. This class will meet after school on Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30-3:30 PM in Room 501, and students that come regularly will receive 2.5 credits per semester. To sign up you will need a 6.5 period form that we will pass out at the beginning of the year! Want more information? You can see what events we compete in on our website at rbspeechanddebate.org.
