It’s election time! Here is the Union Walk schedule to help us elect pro-worker candidates and measures throughout San Diego County to secure a better future for us all. We will try sharing all of our walks including the Building Trades’ walks in Oceanside on many Sundays and opportunities to help out in SD 40 (Mara Elliott) and CD 48 (Marni von Wilpert). What a day! 🍔🎪✨

Thank you to all the union and community members who came out to our Labor Day Community BBQ – it was a beautiful day of rest, connection, and solidarity.

Huge thanks to our incredible AFT 1931 AFT Guild 1931 interns and all our volunteers who made the event run smoothly. Huge shoutout to AFT for their MOVE grant that helped us bring so many union members and community together. We couldn’t have done it without you.

Shoutout to all the unions, constituency groups, and community organizations who tabled to share resources and info – including SEIU-UHW SEIU-United Healthcare Workers West reminding us to vote YES on Prop 40 to tax the billionaires and save California healthcare, and Starbucks Workers United SBWorkersUnited reminding us to boycott Starbucks until their workers get a fair contract.

We hope everyone had a restful, fun-filled day. Now, let’s take that energy into the fights ahead – in our workplaces, in our communities, and at the ballot box.

Labor Day wasn't given to us – it was chosen to distance us from May Day.

May 1 is the true international day of workers – born from the Haymarket Affair, when workers fought and died for the eight-hour day. That's why the powers that be pushed Labor Day to September. They wanted a less militant, less radical day for workers.

But we haven't forgotten. Hundreds of you showed up for May Day this year – marching, rallying, and building power.

So this Labor Day, we rest. But we rest knowing that we'll need that energy for the fights ahead.

• Organizing our workplaces

• Fighting AI that replaces and surveils us

• Taking on billionaires who steal our wages and our futures

• Protecting our elections

• Electing pro-worker candidates and passing pro-worker measures in the midterms

Last week, we showed up for NASSCO shipbuilders. ✊🏽✊🏿✊🏼 ⚓

Our unions and allies packed the streets to stand with IAM 389 as they head into contract negotiations. And they don't just have luck on their side – they have organized worker power.

In seven months, they grew their union from 21% to 67% – adding over 560 new members.

That is the power of organizing. That is solidarity in action.

Now NASSCO workers are at the bargaining table. We wish them strength – because with this kind of unity, they don't need luck. They have each other.

General Dynamics NASSCO has been in San Diego for over 80 years and though they build world class ships for our Navy, worker pay and conditions are anything but world class. IAM 389 has built a movement by organizing workers from 21% to 67% union members. That is a lot more organized worker power going into negotiations.

On Wednesday, May 27, 2026 the SDICLC Delegates passed the following resolution:

Fund People, Not Bombs--Stop Military Operations in Iran and Weapons Transfers to Israel

WHEREAS, on February 28, 2026, the President of the United States initiated major military operations against the Islamic Republic of Iran without a Congressional Declaration of War (per Article I, Section 8, Clause 11 of the U.S. Constitution), without an Authorization for Use of Military Force (per the 1973 War Powers Act), without provocation or necessity of self-defense (per Article 51 of the UN Charter), and without authorization by the UN Security Council (per Article 42 of the UN Charter); and

WHEREAS, an estimated 24,000 children have been killed, many millions displaced, and millions more have suffered profound and enduring disruption to their well-being and education in conflicts across the Middle East over the last three years; and

WHEREAS, as the U.S. enables Israel’s bombing campaign in Lebanon and continued attacks on Gaza, teachers, healthcare workers, and tradespeople—those who make society function—have been killed in their homes, bombed in their workplaces, and denied the ability to live or rebuild; and

WHEREAS, SDICLC Delegates resolved last summer to condemn U.S. support of Israel’s genocide of Palestinians in Gaza and demand an end to U.S. weapons transfers to Israel; and

WHEREAS, according to the Harvard Kennedy School, the ultimate costs of the Iran conflict are likely to exceed one trillion dollars; the Trump Administration has requested $200 billion in supplemental war funding from Congress; and the proposed 2027 defense budget stands at $1.5 trillion; and

WHEREAS, these military expenditures divert national resources from urgent domestic needs — including a $38 billion annual shortfall in federal funding for the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act, proposed cuts of approximately $1 trillion to Medicaid, crumbling infrastructure, and a housing and food insecurity crisis affecting hundreds of thousands of Americans; and

San Diego's housing crisis is an education crisis, & SDEA members have been using their collective power to push for housing solutions that support educators & communities alike. There is finally a safe parking lot on District property where unhoused students and their families can sleep & access services, but this is a temporary solution for families with nowhere else to go. Students, families, & educators need HOUSING! That's why SDEA has endorsed a YES vote on Measure A: Vacant Homes Tax. ✅🍎
