San Diego Sea Scout Ship 1886 spent 17 days exploring Hawaiʻi by boat this summer!

Three Scouts and two adult leaders sailed between Kauaʻi, Oʻahu, Molokaʻi, Lānaʻi, and Maui, gaining hands-on experience as members of the crew. Scouts took part in navigation, charting, course planning, anchoring, dinghy operations, and night watches while also making time for scuba diving, snorkeling, hiking, swimming, and exploring the islands.

The crew experienced some challenging conditions along the way, including 15–25 knot winds, large swells, and a small craft advisory during an offshore crossing. Through it all, the Scouts worked together and gained valuable seamanship, leadership, and teamwork experience.

Scout Winston M. described the trip as an opportunity to “experience Hawaiʻi in a way that would be impossible from land,” with highlights including scuba diving on Kauaʻi, snorkeling with sea turtles, seeing dolphins, and exploring the coastline by dinghy.

An unforgettable 17 days for Ship 1886!

Eagle Scout 9/11 Memorial Service Project

As we remember the nearly 3,000 lives lost on September 11, 2001, we’re proud to share the story of Eagle Scout Ryan T. of Scouts BSA Troop 1648 and the memorial he created in Rancho Bernardo’s Webb Park as his Eagle Scout project.

Inspired by a visit to a fire station and later a trip to Ground Zero, Ryan designed the “One Event, One World” 9/11 Peace Memorial to create a lasting place for the community to remember those who were lost. The memorial includes an olive tree representing peace, a reflection area, and a miniature Twin Towers memorial with plaques.

Ryan and fellow Scouts also helped with portions of the construction, including preparing the site, laying rebar, mixing concrete, and planting the tree.

The San Diego Union-Tribune recently shared Ryan’s story and the work behind this meaningful project.
