Trump says Canada will ‘end up being the 51st state’

U.S. President Donald Trump told a crowd of supporters that Canada will “end up being the 51st state” as he listed a series of longstanding grievances the United States has with its northern neighbour.

“Canada treats us very badly. They always have. Not anymore. It’s a whole different ball game now that Trump is in town,” he said during a campaign rally in Bullhead City, Ariz., on Wednesday.

Trump brought up Canadian tariffs on milk, car companies moving their factories to the U.S. and renaming Lake Ontario to “Lake America.”

According to the U.S. president, Canada “ripped off” the U.S. through tariffs on “anything past two bottles (of milk).”

“They’ll end up being the 51st state, because that’s the only way it works,” Trump said. “We don’t need them, but they need us.”

The U.S. president then asked why the U.S. should be losing billions of dollars “to support a country that isn’t one of us?”

“They’ll be doing something just like Greenland,” he said, adding that it “just adds to our beautiful plate,” referring to the U.S.

“Our plate’s getting larger all the time.”

Foreign meddling

Trump made the comments on the same day Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. ambassador to Canada, suggested the actions of several Canadian politicians could amount to “political interference” in close races ahead of the U.S. midterm elections in November.

Hoekstra pointed to comments made by Industry Minister Mélanie Joly, who said in August that Canada’s retaliatory tariffs are designed to target specific U.S. states.

“It appears that some of this, from our perspective, in the way we view our elections, could be inferred to be election interference,” the ambassador said in an interview on “The Really Big Show” podcast.

One of those close races is in Michigan, where Democrats have tied Trump’s tariff policies to the higher cost of living facing Americans.

Meanwhile, Trump has commented on the elections of several countries throughout his second term in office. Last weekend, he said it was time for Ukraine to get a new president, suggesting Volodymyr Zelenskyy has not done enough to end the war with Russia and blaming him for high diesel prices in the United States.

The president also advocated for Flavio Bolsonaro in Brazil’s elections earlier this month, and endorsed former Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban ahead of his election loss in April.

‘Never the 51st state’

Following the announcement of Canada’s latest retaliatory tariffs on American goods in September, B.C. Premier David Eby announced that the province will install new signs at the U.S. border crossings declaring the province “never the 51st state.”

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Howard Lutnick targeted Ontario in “51st state” remarks last month, saying the province would be the “last out of our 51st states.” The comment was a response to Prime Minister Mark Carney, who called on the Trump administration to “start being serious” about trade negotiations.

In June, after Canada slipped into a technical recession, Trump revived his call to the country to become the “51st state” on social media, drawing sharp criticism from officials from across Canada.

Soon after, Ontario Premier Doug Ford said the president was “back on his high horse” and that Canada’s sovereignty is not for sale.

“I can tell President Trump that will never, ever happen.”

Sweden Formalizes Interim Submarine Training and Södermanland Lease for Poland

Sweden has finalized formal contracts for Polish submarine crew training and the lease of the interim A17-class boat HMS Södermanland to Poland, paving the way for the future delivery of Saab A26 submarines.

The Swedish Defence Materiel Administration (FMV) and the Swedish Navy have signed formal implementation contracts in the frame of Poland’s Orka submarine program. Building on the agreement for the procurement of three Saab A26 (Blekinge-class) submarines, the new accords finalize the framework for crew training and the lease of the interim submarine HMS Södermanland to the Polish Navy. The announcement was made by the Royal Swedish Navy.

Training for the initial Polish submarine crews is already well underway in Karlskrona by the Royal Swedish Navy’s 1st Submarine Flotilla and the Naval Warfare Centre with FMV support. “The training lasts for 18 months, which is the same training length as for a Swedish submarine crew” the Swedish Navy said its LinkedIn account.

The centerpiece of the interim agreement is the transfer and operation of HMS Södermanland. Originally built as a Västergötland-class boat in the late 1980s, the vessel underwent a comprehensive mid-life upgrade that lengthened her hull and integrated an air-independent Stirling propulsion (AIP) system. By leasing the boat, the Polish Navy gains vital hands-on experience operating a modern, Swedish-built AIP submarine ahead of the first A26 deliveries scheduled for 2031. During the lease, the Swedish Navy will continue to provide foundational maintenance and sustainment support.

As Polish crews work through their curriculum in Karlskrona, broader industrial and capability ties continue to deepen. Alongside the interim boat arrangements, the wider Orka framework encompasses comprehensive weapon packages—featuring advanced heavy and light torpedoes—and lays the groundwork for shared underwater domain cooperation, such as potential synergies with Poland’s Ratownik submarine rescue vessel program. With training advancing smoothly, Warsaw and Stockholm are firmly cementing a strategic underwater partnership designed to secure the Baltic for decades to come.

Will The German Navy’s F127 Frigate Displace Other Procurements Over High Cost?

Expenditures in the double-digit billion-euro range associated with the procurement of eight F127 air defence frigates now trigger concerns among the other German service branches that their own projects could be sacrificed.

Media reports repeatedly circulated claims that a single ship of this new class could cost around five billion euros. However, according to the lead construction shipyard, TKMS, the claimed figure is too high.

The debate over other projects being crowded out by the F127 demonstrates that, despite the exemption of defence spending from the constitutional “debt brake” budget threshold, spending on all procurement projects planned under the Bundeswehr’s growth plan is not supported by unlimited funding. Planners, armament officials, and budget authorities must reportedly now set priorities and determine towards which projects, and at what scale, the available funds should be directed.

In the case of the F127—which is intended for Ballistic Missile Defence and is therefore slated to receive state-of-the-art US technology such as the SPY-6 radar and the Aegis combat management system—the risk of this program displacing funding on other projects appears to be less severe than initially suggested. Sources familiar with the matter told hartpunkt that an acquisition of all eight ships in their original configuration is reportedly off the table. Reportedly the effort already faces a significant amount of pressure to produce savings in order to reduce overall cost. Whether other procurement projects could nevertheless be adversely affected remains not entirely clear at this point.

Within the F127 procurement program, observers currently identify two basic choices for proceeding with the effort: The first option would be to not compromise on the specification itself, but rather purchase fewer frigates. An alternative would be to stick to an acquisition of eight frigates, but reduce capabilities of the design. This could imply a different radar-suite, reduced magazine depth for missile ordnance, or reduced endurance and availability. If this seconbd path is indeed taken, it will be interesting to see whether the project will be realized within the existing industrial team or whether alternative industrial arrangements are chosen.
