Thank you for sharing your story and for highlighting the importance of the daily check-ins our Meals On Wheels volunteers provide along with every delivery.
“After using another meal delivery service for about a year, our family decided to switch to Meals On Wheels for our 88-year-old father. Not only was Meals On Wheels more economical, but the daily interaction between the volunteer and client was incredibly important to us, since he was living alone in his home. The previous service simply dropped the food at the doorstep.
That decision proved to be lifesaving.
Shortly after deliveries began, the Meals On Wheels volunteer was unable to make contact with our father one day. The volunteer immediately contacted Meals On Wheels to report the missed check-in, and soon after, we received a call from the Director informing us that they had been unable to reach him.
When I went to check on my father, I found him lying in the hallway after suffering a fall hours earlier. He was injured and unable to get up. If not for the diligence of the Meals On Wheels volunteer and Director, it could have been several more hours before he was found.
