We were beyond thrilled to have illustrator and author LeUyen Pham and the Banyan Roots Collective here on April 11 for a dialogue, children's art project, and food reception. It was an incredible conversation--not to mention after the Q&A discussion and delicious bites, children got an opportunity to draw alongside LeUyen and receive a free sketch of themselves. Ms. Pham is the award-winning and critically acclaimed illustrator of more than 140 books for children, including Freckleface Strawberry with Julianne Moore, Grace for President with Kelly DiPucchio, and the The Princess in Black series with Shannon Hale. Her own books include Big Sister, Little Sister; The Bear Who Wasn’t There; and Outside, Inside. We encourage you to check out her books from the library! Thank you to LeUyen and the Banyan Roots Collective for collaborating with us to host such an inspiring event. Thanks also to Erin Huang for these photos!

We had such a wonderful time guest hosting our very first River Readers Nature Storytime this past Tuesday in Grant Park! We learned all about trees and read books, did activities, and made a forest craft! Did you miss it? You're in luck because the San Diego River Park Foundation hosts an outdoor nature storytime EVERY Tuesday at 9:30 a.m., and Ms. Marika from the Mission Valley Library will be back there to guest host the storytime on the third Tuesday of every month--her next one will be May 19! Grant Park is located at 2310 Camino del Rio N. Enjoy the outdoors, and be sure to bring a blanket or yoga mat and your sunscreen/hats. The space is perfect for books, exploration, and picnicking!

p.s. Did you know that the library loves to visit your school or organization for FREE? It is part of San Diego Public Library's mission to meet our community members beyond the library's walls, and we love to showcase resources and/or conduct programs out in the wild. Email us at mvstaff at sandiego dot gov or send us a Facebook DM.
