San Diego is about to cut one of SDPD's most effective tools — neighborhood cameras — and your voice can stop it.

Tomorrow, City Council votes on funding for Automated License Plate Recognition (ALPR). Since 2023, this technology has supported 700+ investigations, helped recover millions in stolen property, and assisted in serious hate crime cases in Hillcrest! At a time when SDPD is short-staffed, these cameras help officers work smarter. With strong privacy safeguards and independent oversight, it's a tool worth protecting.

Testify in person or online: Monday, June 9 · City Council meeting at 1pm at 202 C Street in Council Chambers.

Can we nerd out on power washing for a minute?

You may have noticed some weird squiggly patterns on the University Ave. sidewalks this week. This is the result of a technique of high pressure hot water and solvent to remove gum from the sidewalks. The Hillcrest Business Association power washes and cleans over 35 city blocks every single month but this scrubbing often won't shift the old gum. That's why, this month, we're taking it up a notch with a special deep-clean project targeting the heavy gum buildup on University Ave sidewalks.

Hillcrest businesses will still get their sidewalks cleaned (with all the water reclaimed) but many of the gum stains will also be removed. Once the gum is gone, we'll scrub the sidewalks and the squiggly lines will be gone too!

Big things are coming to Normal Street — and the facts are clear!

The Pride Promenade project on Normal Street is transforming an underutilized street into a vibrant community gathering space — and it's not costing the City's General Fund a single dollar. Check out this San Diego Fact Check from the City about the benefits of the Promenade~ and none of it's coming from the General Fund.

150 new trees ; new classic streetlights; improved bike connectivity from Downtown to Hillcrest and North Park; space for farmers markets, outdoor movies, festivals & more; a net gain of 40+ new parking spaces; and major stormwater & flooding infrastructure upgrades. Check out the facts: https://tinyurl.com/u76kpsy9

PS~ If you want to be part of this community built project, purchase your paver now! They're selling out! (www.hillcrestbia.org/paver-donor-program) And stay tuned for the Promenade Membership program that'll launch later this month!

🌈 Happy Pride Month from the Hillcrest Business Association.

There's no better place to celebrate Pride than Hillcrest — and this June, to celebrate Pride month, the iconic Hillcrest Sign is shining in full rainbow colors all month long. With the help of generous donors, the Hillcrest sign was upgraded a few years ago so the letters could change colors to celebrate the seasons and holidays.

We're excited to celebrate Pride month, but stay tuned, the Sign puts on a special show Pride weekend too (in July).

We're thrilled to share that HBA's Executive Director, Benjamin Nicholls, has earned the prestigious Leadership in Place Management (LPM) certification. This Memorial Day, Hillcrest was looking more patriotic than ever — and it takes a village!

A huge thank you to the Hillcrest All-Inclusive Kiwanis Club volunteers who roll up their sleeves to install them throughout the neighborhood every year. The Hillcrest Business Association owns the beautiful flag collection and stores them for the neighborhood.

Together, they ensure our streets honor the brave men and women who gave everything for our freedom. Perhaps you saw the flags waving proudly across Hillcrest this Memorial Day weekend and it encouraged you to take a moment to remember why they fly.

Sexy streets are real. Hillcrest gets yet another block of new sidewalks thanks to our parking meter money being re-direct to projects in Hillcrest. You have to give Mayor Todd Gloria credit for this one. New sidewalks are such a rare thing outside new development.
