This is the first wooden One Design racing sloop designed and built especially for Southern California waters. in 1929, the PC has survived over 77 years and is still enjoyed today. While the largest of the fleets is in San Diego, there are smaller groups in Marina del Rey, Los Angeles and Washington State. Of the 84 hull numbers assigned, all but 19 of these lovely vessels have been identified as

never built, lost, destroyed, on the hard or still sailing! Many have been totally restored to live another 77 years! Hull #8 WINGS, believed to be the oldest hull in existence, is now on display at the San Diego Maritime Museum.

Dear Ancient Mariners and Friends,

You have probably heard it enough already but 2020 really is an unprecedented year. Did you ever think you would be told that you were flat out not allowed to use your boat for over a month? No anchoring out, no cruising, no racing, no leaving the dock period! That was not even the case during World War II. We hope you took the down time to get some projects done on the boat and are now ready to go again.

We have certainly missed seeing you all each month at our membership meetings and Guinea Cup races. Halloween is just around the corner, but we want you to brush off those cobwebs and come back out to join us on the water! Government regulations pending we plan to host the November Guinea Cup and the December Half Pint of Rum. Both will be slightly modified to meet current guidelines and accommodate as many boats as possible. Stay tuned for the NOR’s. For our non-racers we encourage you to anchor out in La Playa the weekend of December 12th and welcome the Half Pint Racers as they finish and join you. While we cannot officially endorse rafting up, we will not be disappointed to see it either. Let’s see our burgess fill La Playa!

The Ancient Mariners are also going to experiment with being the ‘Modern Mariners’ by hosting a digital Annual Meeting! Your Board has been meeting via Zoom for a few weeks now and we want you all to come join us in our digital fun. A specific invite will be sent out in a separate email, but the tentative plan is to have a short social where people can chat and catch up before the presentation style meeting starts. Our Board will provide an update on where things stand, announce plans for 2021, and announce the 2021 Board and Officers. Ugly holiday sweaters are encouraged!

Plans for 2021 are already underway. We are preparing some digital presentations to fill in until we can meet in person again, and fingers crossed we can host our regular 2021 racing schedule. Fleet anchor out weekends may have to fill in for in-person interactions so brush up on your code flags so you can signal each other across the anchorage.

Now for the business end of things. Attached to this message is your 2021 AMSS Membership Renewal notice. While we have not been able to hold our normal schedule of events this year our fixed costs have remained the same. The bills for insurance, webhosting, PO Box, postage, printing, etc. did not go away when COVID arrived and with our current renewal numbers we just barely break even. There was no fundraiser this year with the loss of the Yesteryear Regatta so we need your help. Please send in your renewal for 2021 in a timely manner, include your ballot with it and encourage your crew, friends, dock mates, etc. to also consider joining or renewing.
