🍎🍯In celebration of Rosh Hashanah, Team JFS gathered to share traditions, enjoy the sweetness of apples and honey, and reflect on new beginnings. Our very own Sue Cohn led this year’s gathering, guiding us through the customs and meaning behind the High Holy Days. Together, we’re embracing reflection, renewal, and reconnection as we move forward.

The start of a new year is a time to reflect with gratitude, look ahead with hope, and embrace a renewed sense of purpose. Every day we see what’s possible when a community comes together so no one has to face life’s challenges alone.

Thank you to the many volunteers, partners, and supporters who make compassionate support and renewed hope possible. Wishing you and your loved ones a sweet, healthy, and meaningful new year. Shanah Tovah from Team JFS!

Today, we pause to remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the courage of the first responders, service members, and everyday heroes who answered the call in the face of tragedy. May the memories of the brave and the innocent forever be a blessing. We will never forget.

Every year, we witness the power of a united community during our High Holy Days Community Food Drive. These critical donations of canned food and pantry staples sustain thousands of people who turn to JFS for support. With the continued high cost of groceries, gas, and housing, our annual Food Drive is crucial to bringing relief to community members experiencing hunger.

You can help! Look for our blue bins at participating synagogues and Jewish organizations now through the High Holidays. Together, we can ensure that our neighbors have access to healthy food in the months ahead. Learn more at www.jfssd.org/HHD

Many thanks to the students High Tech Middle Mesa who volunteered at JFS for their annual day of service. Students went behind-the-scenes to tour our Joan & Irwin Jacobs Campus; braided challah for our neighbors facing hunger; and made t-shirt tote bags for Lieber’s Corner Market shoppers. We appreciate you taking the time to learn about food insecurity in our community and the many ways JFS is working to .

School is back in session, and we are excited to once again partner with the San Diego County Library for our fall citizenship course! This free 10-week course will help you prepare for the naturalization interview; find a high-quality, low-cost legal service provider who can provide legal consultation; and file your application for naturalization if eligible.

Classes begin on Monday, September 28, 2026, at Lemon Grove Library SDCL , San Diego County Library Potrero Branch, Rancho San Diego Library, and El Cajon Branch Library—choose the location that works best for you! Looking to make an impact in your neighborhood? Join us as a volunteer driver! For many seniors, transportation is one of the biggest barriers to staying connected to their community.

When JFS Volunteer Lara found out that her neighbors, Susie and Neil, needed a ride to the Aviva Saad and Ronnie Diamond Older Adult Center at JFS, she was happy to drive them. “A ride is such an easy way to help to your neighbors and I know one day, I might need one too.”

On today’s edition of , we’re shining a spotlight on what makes our community so special: people showing up for one another, sharing their time and experiences, and finding meaningful ways to help our neighbors move forward.

This week, JFS Friends of the Family gathered at Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego in La Jolla to connect, engage, and be inspired. We heard from JFS Volunteers who shared their experiences helping with On the Go and Foodmobile, as well as from Dana Toppel, JFS CEO, who shared some new and exciting initiatives in the pipeline.

Thank you to everyone who joined us. Watching the sunset together was a lovely reminder that no matter the challenges we face, we never have to face them alone.

JFS Friends of the Family are people with a passion for strengthening San Diego and delivering on our shared commitment of Tikkun Olam (repairing the world). Learn more at www.jfssd.org/FOF

Let’s fight hunger together! September is Hunger Action Month, a time to unite as a community to make an impactful difference in ending hunger. The latest data from Feeding San Diego shows that food insecurity in San Diego County has surpassed peak pandemic levels with a 22.6% increase. That’s more than 429,500 of our neighbors experiencing food insecurity every day—meaning they don’t have consistent access to enough nutritious food.

You can make a difference by…

• Volunteering to sort food in JFS’s Hand Up Food Pantry, restock Lieber’s Corner Market, or deliver a meal to an isolated neighbor at www.jfssd.org/volunteer

• Participating in our annual High Holy Days Community Food Drive at www.jfssd.org/HHD

Thank you for helping us build a more caring community where everyone has access to enough healthy food.
