George Marston believed shopping should be both beautiful and practical, and this image captures that philosophy in action.

It's a broad view of Marston’s Department Store, showing the main sales floor of the newly completed 1896 building in downtown San Diego, organized, elegant, and surprisingly modern for its time.

Even in 1896, Marston’s reflected advanced retail design: open, navigable sales floors, electric lighting throughout, decorative interior details and floral displays, and merchandising techniques influenced by major eastern dry goods houses.

Stepping inside Marston's new store at Fifth and C, visitors in 1896 encountered something new for San Diego—space, light, and order on a grand scale.

Wide aisles stretching between tall columns, guiding movement through carefully arranged departments.

Above, the open central court rising through the building, allowing natural light to filter down into the heart of the store.

This was retail designed as architecture, where the act of shopping became an experience shaped by scale and light.

A garden retreat designed for conversation, relaxation, and beauty.

Shown here around 1928, the Marston House tea house was nestled within the formal gardens and furnished as an outdoor "room." Hanging lanterns and decorative tile added a touch of elegance, while comfortable furnishings invited guests to linger and enjoy the surroundings. Beyond its walls, the view was never quite the same twice, as the changing seasons brought an ever-shifting panorama of flowers and color to the garden.

The tea house remains one of the most charming features of the Marston House grounds, a reminder of George and Anna Marston's belief that gardens should be lived in as well as admired.

This elegant arched entry once welcomed San Diegans into one of the city’s most sophisticated dry goods stores - Marston's, of course!

The massive stonework, striped window treatments, gleaming display windows, and electric lighting reflected the growing confidence of downtown San Diego in 1896, when Marston's new store opened at 5th and C Streets.

Through the entrance you could glimpse the richly appointed sales floor beyond: a world of polished wood fixtures, glass cases, imported goods, and fashionable merchandise that helped establish Marston’s as the city’s premier department store. We can hardly wait to step inside!

The horses at the curb remind us just how different daily life was during the second Cleveland administration, even as stores like Marston’s represented the beginning of modern retail culture in Southern California.

Like its predecessor at Fifth and F Streets, this remarkable Marston's building still stands and remains part of downtown San Diego’s architectural heritage, a rare surviving link to the city’s early commercial history.
