Earlier today, Naval Leadership and Ethics Command (NLEC) San Diego personnel took their commitment to readiness beyond the classroom with a command hike at the historic Old Point Loma Lighthouse.

The hike provided an opportunity to strengthen camaraderie, teamwork, and morale. At NLEC San Diego, we recognize that developing stronger leaders also means developing stronger, healthier, and more resilient teams.

The 2026 Naval Leadership and Ethics Command (NLEC) ELD Symposium successfully brought together leaders and facilitators from across the San Diego waterfront.

Throughout the symposium, participants engaged in meaningful discussions focused on strengthening the Navy’s Enlisted Leader Development (ELD) continuum and ensuring commands are equipped to develop capable, resilient, and mission-ready Sailors.

Key discussions included:

* OPNAVINST 5351.2C Updates and Implementation – Attendees reviewed the latest guidance and discussed practical ways to ensure consistent implementation across commands while maintaining compliance and standardization.

* Fleet Engagement Team (FET) Quality Assurance Initiative – Facilitators shared best practices, lessons learned from Fleet engagements, and methods for improving curriculum delivery and instructional effectiveness.

* ELD Course Requirements and Advancement Eligibility – Leaders clarified course completion requirements tied to advancement eligibility, emphasizing the importance of timely enrollment and command accountability.

* CPOLDC Big Five (OCEAN) Demonstration – One of the symposium’s highlights was the demonstration of the Big Five (OCEAN) personality assessment, showcasing how evidence-based personality insights can improve self-awareness, communication, team dynamics, and leadership effectiveness.

Beyond the formal presentations, the symposium provided an invaluable opportunity for collaboration across the Fleet. Participants openly shared successful practices, identified common challenges, and exchanged innovative ideas to improve leader development programs at their commands.

The event reinforced that Enlisted Leader Development is not simply about completing required courses—it is about investing in people, building competent and ethical leaders, and strengthening the readiness of the Navy for future challenges.

Leadership starts with understanding yourself—and grows by understanding others. At NLEC, learning and professional development never stops.

This week, our facilitators completed the Everything DiSC® Workplace by Catalyst, which is the step in the certification process. The course provided practical tools to better understand behavioral styles, improve communication, strengthen teamwork, navigate conflict, and build more effective relationships.

It reminds us that great leadership isn’t about changing who people are—it’s about understanding what motivates them and adapting our approach to bring out the best in others.
