Most people do not think about how a family gets to the NICU.

They assume there is a car.
A partner who can drive.
A parking spot they can afford.
A job flexible enough to allow it.

For a lot of families we serve, none of that is true. The hospital is across the county. The partner is working a shift they cannot miss. The bus takes two hours each way and does not run on the schedule and NICU runs on. A parent who cannot get to the bedside every day is not a less-committed parent. They are apparent without a ride.

Miracle Babies provides free transportation to NICU families across San Diego and Orange County. Because being there, being present, being known by the nurses, being the person who helps the baby during their feedings, is not optional. It is the whole thing.

A father in the NICU holds things differently than anyone on the outside can see.

He is managing his own fear in a space that was not built for him. The clinical language is directed at the mother. The discharge packet is addressed to the mother. He is expected to hold everything together, which mostly means he holds it alone.

Research shows that up to 43% of NICU fathers experience clinically significant symptoms of depression, anxiety, or PTSD. (Hynan et al., 2013.) Most never tell anyone.

The ones who do reach out, or who are reached first, find out something most of them did not know going in: They were stronger than they thought. The baby comes home. And so do they.

Miracle Babies walks alongside the whole family. Not to be the hero of the story. To help fathers find out they already are.

A family calls. A Lyft arrives. They get to their baby.

Through our partnership with The Samueli Foundation and the Anaheim Ducks Foundation, NICU families at UCI Medical Center now have access to no-cost transportation -- because getting to the bedside every day is not optional, and for families without a car or the margin to cover gas and parking, it has always been out of reach.

Transportation should never be the reason a parent misses a moment.

The hardest part isn't always the NICU.

For a lot of families, the hardest part is the week after they bring their baby home. The monitors are gone. The nurses aren't there. The care team has moved on. And the fear -- the particular, relentless fear that comes from watching your child fight for their life -- doesn't leave with the hospital bracelet.

Miracle Babies provides mental health support to NICU families across Southern California. Licensed therapists who understand this specific kind of trauma. Covered for families when insurance won't. And follow-up, because the families who need help most are often the ones who stop responding.

Happy Birthday and Happy Mother’s Day, Susy! Your kindness, compassion, and caring heart shine through in every ride you provide. You take your motherly love and pass it on to every passenger who steps into one of our vehicles, bringing comfort, warmth, and support to families during such an important time in their NICU journey.

We are beyond grateful for all that you do and the love you pour into our community each and every day.

The capes are put away.

By Tuesday morning we were back to the part that doesn’t have a finish line — coordinating rides to the NICU, checking in with families three weeks post-discharge, assembling care packages, sitting with people in the hardest season of their lives.

Thank you to everyone who ran, walked, donated, and showed up on May 3. The 5K funds the Tuesday mornings. This is what the Tuesday mornings look like.
