Many initiatives and collaborations happening throughout the region to continue to address homelessness were the focus of a gathering today organized by the UC San Diego Homelessness Hub. SDHC Homelessness and Housing Stability Initiatives Senior Vice President Casey Snell and Vice President Jonathan Herrera joined the conversation with leaders from across the San Diego region.

They highlighted the progress achieved and the continuing needs under the Community Action Plan on Homelessness for the City of San Diego; the Housing Instability Prevention Program that SDHC operates with City funding; and the more than 680 new affordable rental homes created with State Homekey funds through SDHC collaborations with the City of San Diego, County of San Diego and additional partners.

The best way to address senior homelessness is to prevent it from happening in the first place. That’s the power of Seniors Safe at Home — and we’re thrilled to see this important program receive some well-deserved recognition.

Ron Donoho’s story for the San Diego Sun highlighting Seniors Safe at Home was recently honored in the 2026 Society of Professional Journalists Contest, shining an important spotlight on an urgent issue facing our community: senior homelessness. As Ron shared in his story, adults 55 and older make up nearly 30% of San Diego County’s unsheltered homeless population, and nearly half are experiencing homelessness for the first time.

That’s why the Lucky Duck Foundation provided the initial $500,000 investment to help launch Seniors Safe at Home alongside Serving Seniors and the San Diego Housing Commission. Through shallow rental subsidies — sometimes as little as $250 per month — the program helps vulnerable seniors remain safely housed rather than fall into homelessness.

It’s a simple, cost-effective approach to homelessness prevention that can make the difference between having a roof overhead and living on the streets.

Congratulations to everyone involved with creating these new affordable rental homes at Cuatro at City Heights!

And then there were 4! Cuatro at City Heights is officially complete! Located on four parcels at the intersections of El Cajon Blvd and Interstate 15, and University Ave and Interstate 15 – these quadruplets bring 117 affordable family units to this dynamic community. The development stands-out and fits-in - with a bold design that reflects the neighborhood's vibrant character. Inspired by the area’s colorful commercial signage, transportation infrastructure, street murals and local iconic landmarks – Cuatro speaks the local dialect.

This project was made possible with an incredible team, including the Wakeland Housing & Development and the City Heights Community Development Corp, in collaboration with the City of San Diego and the San Diego Housing Commission. The A-List general contractor was Allgire General Contractors. Breadtruck Films expertly captured the project, highlighting its design, details, and residents.

Congratulations to all the developers, funders and additional partners who collaborated to create affordable housing developments nominated for Orchid Awards from the San Diego Architectural Foundation. SDHC collaborated on these developments through financing and/or the award of rental housing vouchers to create affordable rental homes for San Diegans with lower incomes.

We’ve added 160 beds to Rachel’s Promise Center for Women and Children, bringing the total to 210.

For the second year in a row, San Diego has seen a decline in unsheltered homelessness. We need to keep that progress going by expanding safe shelter options and helping people move from the streets, into shelter, and ultimately into permanent housing.

When we offer someone help, we need to make sure there is somewhere they can go.

Thank you to our City and Housing Commission teams, nonprofit and faith partners, and private partners who came together to create a safe place for more women and children.

Thank you to all of our community partners, volunteers and participants who came out to our resource fair this past Saturday, July 18, for families in our rental assistance and public housing programs. Together, we shared resources about career services, managing your money and credit, and services like childcare, access to food, utilities and transportation.

In honor of Disability Pride Month, SDHC’s Americans with Disabilities Act Coordinator, Dolores Diaz, shares about the importance of providing program access with dignity for people with disabilities as they overcome barriers. SDHC’s motto is “We’re About People,” and one of our core values is to “treat our clients, staff, community, and partners fairly and with dignity and respect.”
