We are devastated to learn about the Castle Peak avalanche. SAR teams regularly train for avalanche response but the intensity of most avalanches leaves little time for rescue in a wide debris field.

Thank you to the SAR teams and agencies that responded. Our thoughts are with them, the families of the victims, and the communities affected by this tragedy.

Mt. Baldy area trails are closed this week.

A temporary closure has been issued for trails within the Mt. Baldy (Mt. San Antonio) area of the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument.

The purpose of the closure is to provide for public safety due to upcoming winter storms.

This closure is in effect through February 23, 2026.

Team members joined West Valley Search and Rescue , San Bernardino Cave and Technical Rescue Team, and others in this overnight mission. Grateful they were able to walk out. This is an important reminder that these areas require proper planning and equipment.

It's been 8 years since we lost our champion and friend, Larry Falce. As we have done every year since, team members met at DJ Coffee Shop, Larry's favorite place, for fellowship and reflection.

Want to honor his memory this weekend? Throw on an old flannel shirt, head to your local diner for breakfast, talk to a friend, rescue an animal, or do a good deed for a stranger. It's what Larry would have done.

We are grateful to have known Larry, and honored to be part of this team, the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, and the SAR community, .

Remembering Tim and his dedicated life of service.

Timothy Staples - EOW December 14, 2019
On December 14, 2019, Tim was actively searching a portion of Mt. Baldy for a lost hiker in adverse conditions as part of the West Valley search and rescue team. During the search, Tim slipped from the trail and suffered fatal injuries.

Tim was a well-loved history teacher and cross-country coach at St. Lucy’s Priory High School, and later, Damien High School in La Verne. A graduate of Gonzaga University in Washington, Tim met his wife, Katie, while at Damien and married her in 2019. Tim is survived by his new bride and his mother, Barbara. Tim was a dedicated, well-experienced, 9-year member of the team, volunteering hundreds of hours for the citizens of San Bernardino County.

Please take a moment to remember Tim, as he gave the ultimate sacrifice while serving as a volunteer. “So, others may live”.

Always in our hearts.

On this day in 2004, Scott Johnston and Phillip Calvert, devoted members of the San Gorgonio Search and Rescue Team, gave their lives in the line of duty while responding to a call for help in Joshua Tree.

Part of an eight-man volunteer team, they were en route to search for a lost person when a reckless driver struck their vehicle. The crash caused the team’s vehicle to overturn, injuring all members on board. Tragically, Scott and Phil did not survive.

Both men were experienced, highly respected volunteers who dedicated countless hours in service to the people of San Bernardino County. Their commitment, courage, and sacrifice will never be forgotten.

Please take a moment today to remember Scott and Phil—two heroes who truly lived by the Search and Rescue motto:
“So others may live.”
