SCE to hold a virtual Community Meeting to Discuss Public Safety Power Shutoffs

During times of low humidity, dry vegetation and high winds, Southern California Edison (SCE) sometimes uses Public Safety Power Shutoffs (PSPS) to proactively and temporarily shut off power to keep communities safe and reduce the risk of a fire caused by utility equipment.

Due to the risk of extreme weather facing our region, residents may experience longer and more extensive PSPS outages than other areas.

Between October 2023 and January 2025, public safety power shutoffs by Southern California Edison occurred 119 times in the City of San Bernardino alone, totaling more than 4,000 hours of outages and impacting nearly 35,000 residents.

To help residents stay informed and prepared, SCE is hosting a virtual Wildfire Safety Community Meeting for San Bernardino County residents on Wednesday, September 16, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m.

Topics will include:
• Preparing for outages
• Available customer programs and services
• Support during outages
• Emergency preparedness resources
• Overview of local grid hardening projects
• Opportunities for questions and feedback

Nearly 300 San Bernardino children enjoyed a special morning of reading, baseball and fun Saturday at Blair Park!

Dodgers' legend Derrel Thomas, a member of the 1981 World Series champion team, joined children and City Councilmembers Kim Knaus and Mario Flores at the Dodgers Dreamfield for an LA Reads Storytime hosted by the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation and the City of San Bernardino Parks, Recreation, and Community Services Department.

Thomas read aloud to elementary school-aged children, who also received free books and a special Dodgers bobblehead while supplies lasted.

The event brought the excitement of the Dodgers to the San Bernardino community while encouraging young readers to discover the joy of books and develop a lifelong love of reading.

Thank you to the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation and Derrel Thomas for helping make reading a memorable experience for so many San Bernardino children!

Dollars for Dogs This Wednesday at the Mexico Cafe!

Join the San Bernardino Police Foundation for its annual Dollars for Dogs fundraiser on Wednesday, September 16, at The Mexico Cafe.

From 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., San Bernardino Police Department officers and employees will be serving food and drinks, with tips going directly to the SBPD K9 Fund to help provide vital training, care and equipment for the department’s four-legged officers.

Every day, San Bernardino’s K9s put their paws on the line, sniffing out danger, tracking suspects and helping protect the community. This fundraiser provides an opportunity to support these dedicated K9s with the care, training and equipment they need to stay safe and strong.

Come enjoy a meal, thank local officers and show support for the K9s that work hard to keep San Bernardino safe.

We honor the nearly 3,000 lives lost, the first responders and heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice, and the countless acts of courage and compassion that followed.

As a community that has also experienced the devastating impact of terrorism, San Bernardino understands the pain of lives taken, families changed forever, and a community called upon to stand together in the face of tragedy.

Twenty-five years later, we remember those we lost, honor those who served, and reaffirm our commitment to resilience, compassion, and unity.

Register Now for the LA Reads Storytime with the Dodgers Foundation this Saturday at Blair Park!

The City of San Bernardino and the Los Angeles Dodgers Foundation are teaming up to host a special LA Reads Storytime this Saturday from 10:00 am to 11:00 am at the Blair Park Dodgers Dreamfield, located at 1466 West Marshall Boulevard.

This FREE Storytime will be led by a "special guest" followed by a book distribution. Participants will also receive a special Dodgers Bobblehead while supplies last.

This event is recommended for elementary school aged participants. We encourage participants to wear grey or blue jerseys.

OVERNIGHT FULL CLOSURE OF THE I-215 FREEWAY THIS WEEKEND!

Caltrans and BNSF Railroad have announced that there will be a full freeway closure in both directions of the 215 Freeway in the Grand Terrace area between 9:00 pm on Saturday, September 12 and 7:00 am on Sunday, September 13.

In addition to impacting the 215 freeway, detours are expected to create delays on nearby streets.

During the closure, BNSF crews will be performing maintenance on the two railroad bridges that cross the freeway near Iowa Avenue.

In the southbound direction ramps at South Mt. Vernon Avenue, Barton Road, and 10 Freeway connectors to the 215 Freeway will be closed.

In the northbound direction, ramps at East La Cadena and Iowa Avenue will be closed, along with 60 Freeway connectors to the 215 Freeway.

Motorists are encouraged to avoid this area. Otherwise, please allow extra travel time, follow all detour signs and electronic message boards, and be patient.

Veterans' Resource & Camaraderie Day Tomorrow!

Calling all veterans! The Disabled American Veterans local chapter 12 will be hosting a veterans' resource and camaraderie day tomorrow, September 10 from 8:00 am until 1:00 pm at 2501 Pacific Street.

The goal of this event is to make this more than a benefits and resource fair. It is also to bring veterans together and provide camaraderie and brotherhood.

Among the activities will be a VA benefit seminar, veteran focused legal assistance, education resources, lunch, and even a fishing seminar from the Berkley Professional Fishing Team.

"Before and After" Property Cleanups Continue in San Bernardino!

In August, Code Enforcement received a complaint regarding overgrown vegetation at a vacant commercial property on San Bernardino Avenue. A Notice of Violation was issued, and staff contacted the property owner.

In less than 30 days, the property was brought into voluntary compliance. It looks much better now!

To report code violations, including properties in poor condition, contact the City of San Bernardino Call Center at (909) 998-2000 or snap a picture on your phone and upload it using the GoSBCITY app on your smart phone.

A New Little Free Library is Now Open at Anne Shirrells Park!

Congratulations to Girl Scout Troop 1134, who unveiled San Bernardino’s newest Little Free Library on Saturday at Anne Shirrells Park!

The project is the latest to be completed through the City’s Love Your Block Program, which this year is supporting community-led beautification, art, and improvement projects inspired by Route 66.

Despite the summer heat, a great crowd came out to celebrate - including Mayor Helen Tran, Councilmembers Kim Knaus and Mario Flores, and “Bernie” from the Inland Empire 66ers! Everyone was invited to bring a favorite book to help fill the new library and get the collection started.

The project was led by Junior Girl Scouts Luisa and Simone, who each donated one of their favorite books: Elephant & Piggie: Can I Play Too? and Tales of a Fourth Grade Nothing, respectively.

And, of course, we had to ask Bernie about his favorite book. His answer? Where the Wild Things Are!

The project also features a colorful collection of painted rocks forming the base of the library. The rocks were created at a recent community rock-painting event held in partnership with Girl Scout Troop 1419 and the Akoma Unity Center, which is located at Anne Shirrells Park.

If you’re in the area, stop by the new Little Free Library! Bring a book to share, take a book to enjoy, or simply stop by and see what’s available.

A big thank you to Girl Scout Troop 1134 and everyone who helped bring this wonderful addition to the Westside neighborhood to life!

5th Street Paving Project Underway in San Bernardino!

The City of San Bernardino is beginning a major paving project on a nearly one-mile section of 5th Street between E Street and Waterman Avenue to improve the roadway and provide a smoother, safer driving surface.

Work begins tonight, August 31, and, weather permitting, will continue for the next two weeks. Most grinding and paving will take place at night to minimize impacts on traffic.

PROJECT SCHEDULE

August 31–September 3 (5:00 pm–5:00 am)
🔹 Crews will grind approximately 2 inches of asphalt along the entire stretch of
5th Street between E Street and Waterman Avenue.
🔹 Crews will repave 5th Street between E Street and Waterman Avenue.

September 4–9 (7:00 am–5:00 pm)
🔹 Roadway striping will be completed.
🔹 Utilities will be raised to grade.
🔹 Traffic signal loops will be reinstalled.
🔹 Note: Alternating lane closures will be necessary during daytime work.

Drivers are encouraged to slow down, use caution around construction crews, and allow extra time when traveling through the area. Please follow posted signs and traffic-control directions.
