This historic photo captures Adair’s Gas Station at the corner of Highland Avenue and Cajon Boulevard during flooding in March 1938 — a time when heavy storms frequently impacted transportation routes and local businesses throughout the region.

Over the decades, San Bernardino County has continued investing in infrastructure that supports safer travel, flood protection, environmental stewardship, and responsible urban planning. From storm drain systems and flood control channels to improved roadways and transportation corridors, these efforts have helped shape the resilient communities we know today.

Public Works continues building on that legacy by maintaining critical infrastructure that helps protect residents, supports economic growth, and keeps our communities connected for future generations.

From rural desert roads to major commuter corridors, Public Works continues working to improve road conditions, enhance safety, support mobility, and connect communities throughout the county.

Caltrans District 8 is starting a $3.1 million emergency repair project on Interstate 15 near the Cima Road overcrossing. The bridge, built in 1961, is located south of Mountain Pass between Baker and the Nevada state line.

Traffic impacts will include a one-lane closure on the overcrossing with temporary traffic signals and reverse traffic control in place 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Full closures of northbound I-15 may also take place from 11 p.m. Tuesday, May 26 through 8 a.m. Thursday, May 28, as needed.

Crews will repair damaged parts of the bridge above the northbound lanes to help keep the structure safe and in good condition. The project is expected to be completed by summer 2026.

This historic image from the Redlands Daily Facts captures flooding at Redlands High School during the September 24, 1976 storm that impacted South Redlands and surrounding communities. Heavy rainfall and overflowing storm flows left streets, neighborhoods, and public areas inundated, highlighting the challenges communities faced during major storm events.

Storms like these helped shape the ongoing efforts to improve flood control infrastructure throughout San Bernardino County. Today, Public Works and the Flood Control District work year-round to maintain channels, storm drains, debris basins, and flood protection systems designed to reduce flooding impacts and help keep residents safe.

While storms remain a powerful force of nature, investments in infrastructure and emergency preparedness continue helping build stronger and more resilient communities for future generations.
