Although "open" adoptions are never totally understood, closed adoptions are sometimes difficult. Always encourage at least semi-open when acceptable to all.

Approximately 5 million Americans alive today are adopted. There is no debate of how family medical history is important. There should not be a debate on how a marginalized group of people cannot get their original birth certificate while other people can. You should not have to take commercial DNA tests to locate your bio siblings or pay for death certificates to find out how your parents died. Closed adoption is a failed, outdated practice.
