We regret that we failed to post this picture and highlight the visit of this leader last week. We were privileged to have Ms. Laura Koerner, Chairwoman of the Texas Veterans Commission, stop by and say hello to us at our booth at the Women Veterans Summit last Friday. She was also a keynote speaker during the event. We want to thank her for her support, her dedication to veterans, and her leadership in veterans affairs throughout the State.

Undersecretary for Memorial Affairs Sam Brown spoke this morning at the Women Veterans Summit. He stopped by our information booth where he presented a coin to Program Support Assistant Roneece Coleman for her outstanding outreach and customer service. We got busy while he was there and Mr. Brown provided expert burial benefit information to a few of our women veteran customers! Thank you for the assist, sir.

Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery is proud to have participated in the planning for the Southwest Region Women Veterans Summit and today is opening day!! We are honored that the FSHNC Memorial Services Detachment, led by Commander Jackie Jones, provided the Honor Guard for the opening ceremony.

On Monday, 29 June 2026, nearly 84 years after he passed, 1st Sergeant Daniel Proctor, United States Army, was laid to rest in Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery joining his wife, Sarah, in Section 25, Grave 1583. 1st. Sgt. Proctor was serving with the 31st Infantry Regiment in the Philippines during WW2. When the Islands fell to the Japanese, he became a Prisoner of War of the Japanese. After having survived the Bataan Death March, he was imprisoned in the Cabanatuan POW Camp where died 4 November 1942. He was among approximately 2800 American servicemen who died at Cabanatuan. Those remains that were unable to be identified when recovered following the war were buried in the Manila American Cemetery, maintained and operated by the American Battle Monuments Commission, as unknown soldiers. The remains from Cabanatuan Common Grave 707 were disinterred by the Defense POW / MIA Accounting Agency in 2018. From those, 1st Sgt. Proctor was identified on 26 November 2025. He was buried with full military honors and his flag was presented to his granddaughter. We are honored to have reunited Daniel, under his own name, with his wife, and are humbled that the family has entrusted us with his care in this National Shrine. 1st Sgt. Proctor is an American Hero who gave his all to ensure our 250 years of American Liberty.

Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery had the honor of hosting the Honorable Doug Collins, Secretary of Veterans Affairs, on 18 June 2026. The Secretary met with cemetery leadership, toured the facility, visited and place coins on the headstones of several Medal of Honor recipients, and presented his personal challenge coin to five employees for their outstanding service to veterans.
