According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness, su***de is the second leading cause of death among high schoolers and the leading cause of death for 14- to 15-year-olds specifically.

September is National Su***de Prevention Month, and we all have a part in creating a caring school environment with support from parents, school staff and community partners to help prevent such tragedies.

By understanding the emotional and physical signs, we can protect our students and help them find the resources and support they need.

Let’s make sure to vote!

Democrat state Rep. Gina Hinojosa stopped at a Dallas park Thursday, Sept. 3, to lay out her plan to fix Texas public schools if elected to the governorship on Nov. 3.

With public school advocates of varying political leanings standing in support of her, Hinojosa said she will fire Texas Education Agency Commissioner Mike Morath on Day One and bring Texas public schools back to the basics of learning.

Texas is barely into the first year of its new school voucher program, and already the comptroller’s office is asking the Legislature to more than double its appropriation for this tax giveaway for private schools and homeschoolers.

Texas taxpayers are spending $1 billion on the program during this school year. The comptroller is now seeking a new appropriation of $2.3 billion for the next two years, or an additional $150 million a year.
