San Antonio River Authority

San Antonio River Authority San Antonio River Authority SARA, created in 1937, is one of many such active river authorities in the State of Texas.

In 1917, the voters of Texas, recognizing the necessity of developing and conserving the State’s water resources and inspired by devastating floods of 1913 and 1914, passed a Constitutional amendment allowing the Legislature to create special purpose political subdivisions of the State to serve regional areas, generally coincidental with river basins and to be generally known as river authorities. Its jurisdiction covers 3,658 square milesβ€”all of Bexar, Wilson, Karnes and Goliad Counties.

Today, our hearts and minds are with the families and friends of the 13 community members who lost their lives one year ago today along Beitel and Leon creeks. We hope everyone who was personally affected by this tragic event finds comfort in the memories they shared together and is able to find peace.

On the anniversary of one of the deadliest single-day floods in our city’s history, we’re also thinking of the first responders who aided in search and rescue efforts. Their heroic actions not only saved dozens of lives, but also helped bring closure to the families who lost loved ones.

Every life lost due to flooding is a tragic loss for our community, and we’re committed now more than ever to advancing flood safety and awareness until we reach zero lives lost to flooding in Bexar County and across the San Antonio River Basin.
